-Breakout year in 1997, posting 19-5 record and 3.18 ERA,
which placed him in contention for that season's Cy Young Award

Community work
Actively involved in many Bay Area charities, especially those involving children...plays key role in National Multiple Sclerosis Society's (NMSS) drive to raise money for multiple sclerosis research and care...serves as spokesperson for NMSS' Bay Area chapter, encouraging kids throughout Northern California to help raise money for non-profit agency...each year, meets with 28 county champions from NMSS read-a-thon, providing each with autographed baseball and personal encouragement for helping this worthy cause...also hosts children afflicted with multiple sclerosis and other serious or life-threatening diseases at 3Com Park...in addition, has actively involved himself with Make-A-Wish Foundation, Wender Weis Foundation for Children--organization that provides relief to abused and neglected children in the Bay Area--and Oakland Ballet, through his performance of toy soldier in Ballet's fundraising presentation of "The Nutcracker"...has participated in Giants' off-season Care-A-Van last 3 years, visiting hospitals, youth organizations and civic groups throughout Northern California in January...has worked with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of San Francisco...also assists with Giants' Kids and Rewards Clubs activities.
