WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GERMAN SHEPHERDS

PERSONALITY

The German Shepherd breed has a distinct personality marked by a direct and fearless, but not hostile, expression, self-confidence and a certain aloofness that
does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. The dog must be approachable, quietly standing has ground and showing confidence and wil-
lingness to meet overtures without itself making them. It is poised, but when occasion demands, eager and alert; both fit and willing to serve in its capacity
as companion, watchdog, blind leader, herding dog or guardian, whichever the circumstances may demand. The dog must not be timid, shrinking behind
its master or handler; it should not be nervous, looking about or upward with anxious expression or showing nervous reactions, such as tucking of tail, to strange
sights or sounds. Lack of confidence under any surroundings is not typical of good character.

SIZE

The German Shepherd dog is longer than tall, With the most desirable proportion as 10to 81/2. The desired height for males at the top of the highest
point of the shoulder blade is 24 to 26 inches; the female is 22 to 24 inches. The length is measured from the point of the proscenium (or breast bone)
to the rear edge of the pelvis, the ischial tuberosity.

COLOR

The German Shepherd varies in color, and most colors are permissible. Strong, rich colors are preferred: Nose black, Pale, washed-out colors and blues are livers
are serious faults. A white dog or a dog with a nose that is not predominantly black must be disqualified. The most commonly seen colors are black
and tan, black and red, black and silver, sable and black. The black on the dog's back can range from a saddle to a complete cape. Black dogs may be entirely
black or may have scattered tan, brown or gray hairs.Although white German Shepherds have been mentioned throughout the breed's history, they are disqualified
under the standard and are not desire.

PROTECTIVENESS

This protective instinct, combined with her herding instincts and her desire to work is what makes the breed so valuable to the police and military. Because
of this instinct, many people view German Shepherds as standoffish or aloof, as well they should. German Shepherds do not greet every person they meet with a
wagging tail and a licking tongue; other dogs can do that. Instead, German Shepherds will stand their ground and look people in the eye. Friendly strangers
may be greeted with a slightly wagging tail. Strange or threatening people will be greeted with a growl. However, this
doesn't mean the breed is cold or unfeeling. Known friends will be remembered recognized and greeted as friends. Depending upon the dog and how good a friend
you are the greeting may be a cold nose in the palm of the hand and a wagging tail or it may be a frenzied greeting that includes a dancing body, a licking tongue
and cries of joy.
