HISTORY
Methodist Church - 1904 to 1925
United Church of Canada
Inaugurated - June 10, 1925
Melfort United Church has a firm foundation at 220 Burrows Avenue West.
It should have as there have been 2 churches built on that location.
In 1904 the Methodist Church was built with Rev. L.R. MacDonald
as first minister.  (In 1902 the town site began and later services were held first over at
Joe Walker's blacksmith shop and later at A.E. Cole's feed store)
In December of 1904 the first structure built in Melfort for the purpose of worship was dedicated.  The congregation sat in ordinary chairs and coal oil lamps provided light.
A new church was decided on
which would cost $ 32,000.00.
September 28, 1928 - Cornerstone laid.
Services were held in the basement
that winter.
Summer of 1928 - $2500.00 raised
for new pews.
May 26, 1929 - Dedication of the
new church.
For the $16,000.00 mortgage, 40 men signed a $ 500.00 guarantee.
The Cornerstone - Ever wonder what is in the cornerstone of our church?
It contains copies of the Melfort Moon and Melfort Journal, a historical record of the
church, a coin minted in 1928, a photo of the old church, a copy of the official
minutes re: building of the new church and a record of the donation of the
cornerstone by Duff Nisbet of Saskatoon
Christian Education Centre - sod turning, June 24, 1962
