Pangkor was different from the other beaches in the sense that there were
more locals there than foreigners when I went. The ferry to the island from
Lumut was cheap and it took only half an hour to reach the island. I
remembered viewing the spectacular sunset as the boat slowly approached the
island. It was the last few boats that were to leave for the island on that
day and fortunately we made it. Nic and I were travelling back from Thailand
and we planned to meet our friends, Zhixiong and Gracia, who had reached the
day earlier at Pangkor.
The beach at pangkor was very quiet during our stay at Pangkor
Indah which was our chalet type of accommodation. I remembered it cost about
RM50 per night. Surprisingly I also saw my friend, Emily and her gang there
who were on their way back from an expedition. Heard from my two friends that
they rented bicycles and explored the island. The beach we went to is called
Teluk Nipah Beach, as recommended by Lonely Planets. It was quite secluded
with not many people and at the time we went, we just simply had the whole beach
by ourselves.
If you can afford it, try the private resort on the neighbouring island, Pangkor Laut. The private beach Emerald Bay there was reknowned for its clear water and powdery sand.
Here's how we reach there:
Singapore (Kranji MRT, Bus 170)
Causeway (Continue on Bus 170 after crossing custom)
Larkin Bus Station (Buy coach ticket RM29, eat dinner)
Lumut Town (Morning, walk to jetty, boat fare RM3, 1/2 - 1 hr)
P. Pangkor (cab to Teluk Nipah Beach RM12)
