Amate Bark Painting
Folk Art of Latino America
Grade 4 Project 2005
For el Dia de los Muertos we go to the graveyard but on 4 de julio, we go to a park. On Dia de los Muertos we celebrate the spirits and on 4 de julio we celebrate the birthday of the United States.

I show this in my Amate art by having Uncle Sam shooting off fireworks with gravestones around him. He is shooting off a firework that is shaped like a gravestone.

I know that the Mexican Indians scrape bark off a tree, then they aint it. This turns into a beautiful picture.

Dia de los Muertos compares to Christmas. The Christmas flower is the poinsiettia and the Dia de los Muertos is the marigold. During Christmas we put Christmas lights on our house and buy a Christmas tree. For Dia de los Muertos, we create a beautiful altar and go to the graves at the grave yard.

In my art, I drew two houses with Christmas lights. I also drew a grave yard and on some of the graves I put the names I know of people who have died. I also drew a park with a swing and baby swing.

What I know about Amate art is to use bright colors and white. The art is outlinded in black. The picture is painted on bark.

Halloween and el Dia de los Muertos both light candles, eat sugar candy and kids have lots of fun. Kids both run around and have parties. I show this in my amate art by drawing candles, sugar candy, kids and the dark night.

Workers strip bark from trees then put water on the bark then they squish the bark with rocks. After that, they paint the bark and then sell the art.
