PARAPLEGIC FARM ATTACK VICTIM ATTACKED AGAIN - ON NATAL BEACH

Jan. 29. DURBAN. Professor Ardu Wessels of Tzaneen -- who was shot in the spine during a 23 December 1999 farm attack which left him paraplegic -- was attacked again this weekend while seated in his wheelchair on Mtwalume beach at the Natal South Coast.

Professor Wessels was watching his wife, sister and brother-in-law swimming in the surf from his wheelchair on the beach, when a black man armed with a knife, approached him and demanded his wedding ring.

Because the paraplegic man's finger was too swollen to get the ring off, the attacker bit into the ring and the finger to rip the gold band off with his teeth, injuring the finger. The attacker grabbed his sister's wallet and demanded that Wessels hand over his cellphone. The paraplegic Prof. Wessels tried to defend himself with his revolver but the attacker knifed him in the hand and ran off with the cellphone.
