MTB Southern Ontario
Guelph Lake Recreation Area, Guelph

Speed River
* Royal Forest Trail *
Speed River Spur
Single Track

This is one of many shoreline paths following the banks of the Speed River, part of the Royal Forest recreational trail network connecting Riverside Park to the Guelph Lake Rec Area. Note the bright green ferns already 2-3 ft high and it's only May.

Guelph Lake
* Royal Forest Trail *
Single Track Spur

The spur trails branching from the main Royal Forest Trail are all well-travelled and maintained by local riding groups like GORBA (Guelph Off-Road Biking Association). In many areas, soft bog patches are typically covered by log ladders.

Guelph Lake Trail #2 * Guelph Lake Trail 2 *
Single Track
Tight & Twisty

Branching from the main Trail 1, Trail 2 is a twisty section of single track that winds thru stands of spruce & pine forest.

You can only see 1 bend ahead on this trail. The spruce is so thick, it's difficult to know when any traffic is coming.

This trail has everything. Handlebar tight blind corners with no roots or debris, then long twisty runs threading thru acres of white pine trees.

Guelph Lake Royal Tunnel * Guelph Lake Trail 2 *
The Tunnel

Locals, have nick-named this section "the tunnel"

Like a perfectly arched tunnel, this runs dead straight, wide and flat for a good 1/4km. A fun section for high-speed cruising. There is room for 2 bikes to pass.

This is a plantation of white pine trees grown deliberately by the conservation authority for ecological stability and species protection.

Guelph Lake Trail  3
* Guelph Lake Trail 3 *
Single Track

The unique thing about Guelph Lake is the variety of scenery and terrain. Unlike many parks, every trail at Guelph Lake, has its own distinct personality that's very different from the next trail. Trail 3 pictured above, runs thru over-grown orchards.

Just Twisty

Trail 4 is a riders dream. Fast and smooth and twisty. The entire trail weaves in and out of pine trees, perfectly aligned like chess pieces

After 5 minutes riding this trail, it feels like a never ending maze. The trail twists and turns so much, it bewilders your sense of direction.

You have to stay totally focused on the trail ahead. Corners come so fast and frequently, one wrong move and you're kissing a tree.

Guelph Lake Trail 6 * Guelph Lake Trail 6 *
Single Track

Trail 6 is a wandering single track connecting the front half of the park to the lake section.

There is something here for every level of rider and avid scenery lover. Around every corner, a new kodak moment or eye candy to make the ride that much more fun.

Funny thing. There's no map of the trails, but somehow you don't care if you get lost!

I took a picture of this apple tree in blossom because it was stunning and totally unexpected.

Lake Shore Tour

Trail 7 follows the shoreline of Guelph Lake. At the intersecting junction of trails 6,7 & 8 are "the boulders". This is a local landmark that G.O.R.B.A. claims like a monument. Many have scratched their names into the huge rocks like a guestbook.

Guelph Lake Trail 8 * Guelph Lake Trail 8 *
Hilly Single Track

Trail 8 is single track that's all dips and climbs and corkscrew turns thru thick hickory bushes.

Right where Katherine is, there's a steep descent right to the edge of the water. Hmmm... Should I walk or should I ride?

At the end of this twisty trail is a monster climb, over 2 logs, up to the boulders intersection.

This is a mature pine forest. The trees are much taller, with bigger tree trunks, fewer lower branches and lots of nasty exposed roots.
