MTB North Carolina
Chimney Rock Park, Chimney Rock - Lake Lure

Lookout Point

Chimney Rock is a flat natural boulder outcrop extending from Chimney Mountain. The lookout is about 1,250 feet above the main park entrance from Lake Lure below.

From the parking lot, visitors ride a 26-storey elevator built inside the mountain. At the top, you walk a series of catwalks to the lookout with the American flag.

For the serious hiker, there's a boardwalk trail that circles and climbs the cliffs reaching the top of Chimney Rock.

This climb is not for the faint of heart. There are spiral staircases to climb, and 2 subway grottos to hunch through.

Opera Box
& Devil's Head

This photo was taken from Chimney Rock looking back towards the face of the mountain.

Halfway up the cliff, you can see a wooden rail fence cut into a crevice. Inside there, is the Opera Box lookout.

The photo of Chimney Rock Lookout (above), was taken from that Opera Box balcony.

To get there, visitors have to climb up the skyline trail. The skyline trail winds across the top of the mountain ridge, over to Hickory Nut Falls.

An Awesome View

The View

Breathtaking! That's all you can say. You can see for over 75 miles to the mountain ranges in South Carolina. Beyond that fence is a 600 foot drop cliff. Joanne doesn't seem to mind (but she smiles all the time anyway).
