CONSTITUTION
OF THE
MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY
CHESS CLUB



Article I - Name of Organization

This organization shall be known as the Mississippi State University Chess Club.

Article II - Purpose

The purpose of the chess club will be to organize and promote chess tournaments and matches, to provide instruction in the game, and to sponsor other events of interest to the Chess Club such as simultaneous exhibitions and problem solving contests.

Article III - Membership

Membership will be open to all MSU students and staff.

Article IV - Non-discrimination clause

Mississippi State University Chess Club does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or handicap.

In conformity with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Office of the Vice President for Business Affairs has been designated as the responsible party to coordinate efforts to carry our responsibilities and make investigation of complaints relating to nondiscrimination.

Article V - Officers, their elections and their duties

  1. The offices shall be President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer.

  2. The election will be held in May at the last meeting of the club during the spring semester. Officers will be elected by majority vote of the members present at the May meeting.

  3. The officers' terms shall be from June 1 until the last club meeting the following May.

  4. The duties of the officers shall be:

    President - The President shall preside at all business meetings and shall take the initiative in organizing tournaments, matches and other events. He or she will be the club's principle spokesman and will be responsible, along with the faculty advisor, for seeing that the club adheres to all University regulations. The President will be elected from the membership with no restrictions as to student or staff status.

    Vice-President - The Vice-President will preside at meetings in the President's absence. This officer will cooperate with the President in scheduling chess events and will be responsible for continuing the club as an affiliate in good standing with the United Chess Federation. This officer will be elected from the club membership with no restrictions as to student or staff status.

    Secretary-Treasurer - This officer will keep an accurate record of all meetings and will be in charge of all monies associated with the club. He or she will be responsible for ensuring that the club pays the required yearly fee for affiliation with the United Chess federation and will also be responsible for publicity of events planned by the club.

Article VI - Meetings

  1. Meetings will be held weekly at a time and place to be determined at the beginning of each semester.

  2. Meetings will be held in the Union Building, with the time and place dependent upon that availability of space in this facility.

Article VII - Dues and Assessments

Membership in the Mississippi State University Chess Club will involve the payment of $5/year. Membership dues will involve two payments of $2.50 each per semester to be paid by the last club meeting held in September and January respectively. Individuals may select to pay the Yearly dues in a lump sum of $5 by the last meeting held in September.

Article VIII - Amendments

The constitution may be amended by a majority vote of the members present at a regular meeting after the proposed amendment has been recommended and discussed.

Article IX - Faculty Advisor

The faculty advisor to the Chess Club will be selected at the last meeting in May. The faculty advisor will counsel with the officers and the membership regarding tournaments, intercollegiate matches, and other events and will be responsible, along with the President, for seeing that the Chess Club adheres to all University regulations.
