People ask "What is there to do on Dauphin Island?"  My usual reply is "Walk the
beach, read a book, eat, take a nap, walk the beach, read a book, eat, take a nap........."  The
peace of the island won't be found at Gulf Shores, or Panama City, or Destin.  Dauphin
Island is a place where you won't have to wait in lines; you won't be caught in snarled up
traffic, creeping along at 20 mph, to drive the 4 miles to the beach.   It's a place where
you can create time - time to spend with your family and friends, to relax and savor the
good things in life.

You can enjoy several fine restaurants on the island and shop in the small boutiques along
Bienville Boulevard.  You will find offerings of souveniers, handmade chocolates, beach
wear clothing, fresh baked goodies from the Lighthouse Bakery, ice cream shops and
computer access coffee shops.

Fresh seafood can be purchased right off the shrimp boats at Patrona's Seafood; it is
located on the bayside of the island.

If you spend time on the island, you will go to Ben Burger's store, The Ship and Shore,
several times; most folks go at least twice a day.  Ben has everything you could possibly
want from groceries, to hardware, to movie rentals, to liquor and wine.

There is live music on the island at several of the restaurants and also at the one, sure
enough, "honkey-tonk", King Neptune's Club.  Also, live music can be heard just off the
island at several clubs located on route 193.

Fishing is easy on the island.  There are free fishing piers, and fee paid fishing piers and
just fishing in the surf on the beach.  All your tackle and bait can be purchased at Ben
Burger's store.  You can charter a fishing trip from the island.  You can rent a kayak
and paddle out to Sand Island and fish there, too.

The Bird Sanctuary is just a short walk "up the beach" and is also accessible from
Bienville Blvd.  You will surely want to see the Indian Shell Mound; it's an ancient
burial ground for tribal female shamans.  Fort Gaines is an interesting historical site to
tour and just across the street is the Estuarium, a museum featuring the life forms of the
gulf and marshes of Dauphin Island.

The island has a snowball stand, a goofy golf course and a go cart track for youngsters;
there is also a game room.  There is a public golf course which overlooks the gulf and
Sand Island and also public tennis courts.

If you feel the need for further "excitement", Mobile is only a 30 minute drive away ;
Gulf Shores is a short ferry ride away.

Did I mention the pool at the Surf Club?  It's really nice for the kids and the pool deck
makes a great place to enjoy friends and cocktails at sunset.  The beach is wonderful early
in the morning, in the middle of the day, late in the day and after dark.  It is never crowded
and the boardwalk makes it very easy to get all that "necessary beach stuff" down to the
water's edge.  The beach is never crowded because the Surf Club has only 39 units and
is surrounded by gated communities. The Surf Club has owners who are permanent residents, weekend residents from Mobile, and several who rent their units.  You can find solitude if you choose.  Your sense of privacy is exceptional, should you desire it to be so.  There will be no daily "housekeeping" coming by to intrude on your privacy.  Being at the Surf Club is like being "at home" on the beach. If you feel like company, you can always mix and mingle at the pool.  The folks at the Surf Club are nice. This "sense of community" is one of the intangible things about the Surf Club which makes being there such a relaxing and wonderful way to spend your vacation.

Recently, the Dauphin Surf Club has added a grilling and picnic area for your dining pleasure; be sure to make "reservations" with the managers, Mike and Vicki, to use one of the grills.
