| Additional "things to do" in Mobile and on the Island, too: Mardi Gras happens each year during January and February. There are parades daily where you can easily gather up enough "jewelry" and moonpies to last a lifetime. There are 2 Krewes that parade on the Island. Folks gather on Bienville Blvd with their chairs and wine and await the parade. Bellingraph Gardens are close by on the mainland. This garden always has something in bloom and is located in a beautiful setting on the Fowl River. Mobile has a beautiful Sanger Theater which brings a variety of top entertainment to town. Mobile also has an Imax Theater. The U.S.S. Alabama, a retired World War II battleship, is moored just off the I-10 causeway bridge over Mobile Bay. Just across the Mobile Bay on the eastern shore is Foley, Alabama. Foley has a huge outlet mall which attracts busloads of shoppers. July 4th is always fun on the Island. There is usually a party at the Surf Club and everyone goes to the beach after dark to watch the fabulous fireworks display the town sposors. In August of each year, Dauphin Island hosts the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. The Island's population swells by 40,000 people that week. The Rodeo awards large cash prizes for the biggest fish caught and seeing these fish is a big attraction for many people. If you are so inclined, the Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos are just 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Island along I-10. |
