The Mustard Seed Communities began in 1979 as a home for abandoned children with disabilities.   Today, the community cares for roughly two hundred children at 4 locations in Kingston, Jamaica (as well as expansion sites in other countries).  In addition to the children with mental and physical disabilities, they have a homes for teenage mothers and HIV babies. We had the privilege of meeting and caring for many of these children... and left the island richer for having known them...

This is Cedrick! Everyone in our group was taken in by his charm and big smile.   He loved having his picture taken as well as taking pictures with whatever camera he could get his hands on!

In this photo taken at Jerusalem, Damien is taking care of two of the younger children.

This woman works at the Dare to Care house.   Here, she is feeding one of the children.

We spent a day with the girls at Mary's Child - the home for teenage mothers. Becky Saydak is visiting with Shawna (age 13), and her two week old daughter Kelly.  Shawna wants to go back to school to become a teacher or a nurse.

One of Dave Sims best memories... "I remember making [a boy named] Ricky laugh....his laugh was like a symphony of 1000 violins making sweet music to my ears and brought a huge smile to my face. He may have forgotten that moment 20 minutes later, but I cherish the fact that I made him laugh and gave him a memory of happiness that made up a part of his life, no matter how minute of a fraction of his life that it was. The memory did exist and is just as valuable as any of the memories that we bring back."

Ricky was one of the children that everyone knew.  Although we couldn't understand the words he spoke, we understood his his desire to be helpful.  In this picture, he and Alberto Scotti are working to clean up the clinic at Jerusalem.

Cathy Rossi had a wonderful experience with a child named Dwight at Sophie's Place:  "I met Dwight shortly after being instructed by Brother Garvin that our most important task was to "see God in the children" and by Nadine who said, "These children already have their place in heaven, they are here to help us". Dwight doesn't say much but always has a big smile on his face. I fed Dwight a bowl of soup one afternoon. During the half an hour or so that we were together, Dwight patiently waited for me to figure out the best way to feed him without spilling the soup all over both of us, and guided me without speaking any words usually resting his hand casually on top of mine. When we were finished, he gave me a big smile and said, "Thank you." I truly felt in the presence of God that afternoon and felt that his hand on mine was the hand of God guiding me. I was very blessed by being able to spend some time with Dwight."

Alberto, Cathy, and Evan play with the kids at Sophie's Place.

We witnessed many of the older children looking after the younger ones.  In this picture. Omar is playing doctor for one of the babies at My Father's House.

This pictures shows Ellen, Kelley, Stacey, and Dave visiting with some of the girls at Jerusalem.  They were taking a break from classes on a beautiful day!  (Notice their uniforms.)
