Selama beberapa waktu media online termasuk blog banyak sekali yang membahas rumor kehadiran penyimpanan online versi Google yang berbasis komputasi awan (cloud computing) yang disebut Googe Drive. Melalui blognya, pada tanggal 25 April 2012, akhirnya Google menyampaikan informasi resmi tentang peluncuran Google Drive. Untuk tahap awal, Google memberikan fasilitas penyimpanan 5 GB gratis, selanjutnya user bisa menambah kuota penyimpanan dengan biaya yang sudah ditentukan seperti 15 GB dengan biaya $2,49/per bulan, 100 GB dengan biaya $4,99/per bulan atau 1TB dengan biaya $49,99 per bulan.
Masih menurut blog resmi Google, layanan Google Drive terintegrasi dengan semua paket layanan Google seperti Google Docs, penyimpanan foto, video bahkan OS dengan perangkat Android, Gmail dan masih banyak lagi. Untuk pengguna Android program Google Drive juga sudah bisa didownload. Layanan Google Drive sangat bermanfaat sekali karena bisa menyimpan dan membuat lebih banyak dokumen secara leluasa.
