Our Pumpkin Project
In mid October, we used a 13kg pumpkin to help us learn about weight and height.  We also used the pumpkin in our language arts program to develop our descriptive writing skills.

We began our pumpkin project by describing what our pumpkin looked like.  Students used lots of juicy words such as:  orange, rotting, bumpy, gigantic etc.  We then moved into the math component where we measured how many centimeters tall our pumpkin was and how many cm round it was.  Students were surprized when they learned the distance around was almost 1 meter.  We then weighed ourselves on a scale and predicted whether the pumpkin would weight more or less then we did.  Finally, we weighed the pumpkin to check our prediction.  We then incorporated a bit of science into our project by guessing whether or not  the pumpkin would sink or float in a huge tub of water.  Most students thought the pumpkin would sink because it was so heavy; however, since the pumpkin is full of air, it floated.  The final page of our project was to illustrate how we would carve our pumpkin.  The students had a lot of fun with this hands on math activity!
Aaron is measuring how tall the pumpkin is.
Jesse measures how fat the pumpkin is!
Willie gets weighed!
Will it sink or float?  McKenzie our mentor helps out!
