Calendar Activities
This year our claendar time will be a little different.  Each morning Mrs. Davey will do some calendar activities to get the day started.  Then in the afternoon, I will take a deeper look at the calendar with the students since so much math can be learned during daily calendar time.

Everyone will get a turn to be the calendar helper for the week.  Their job is to update all the information while I do the "talking" with the class.  We begin by reading the date on the white board, then I ask questions about the date such as: What month is it?  What school day is it?  How many months in a year?  When the calendar helper is ready for us we begin by reading Today is.... etc.  We then talk about the calendar and I ask questions like:  How many Mondays are in September? etc.  We then put up a tally mark for another day in school and count the tallies (excellent counting by 5's practice!)  From there we move to the weather graph.  We stick up a square to best describe the weather of the day, then students take turns making statements about the graph.  Next we discuss the seasons and our centers for the day.  Finally we put up a coin to represent the number of days in school.  Our goal is to represent the number of days using the least amount of coins.  It's an excellent time to talk about the coins and their values.
