~ Breads 2 ~
SthrnRebel      i've been aimin to try this for awhile now... and i just gotta... Mmmm!
Indian Fry Bread

2 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/8cup oil (or melted Shortening)
1/4 to 1/2 cup powdered milk (or 1/4 cup evaporated milk)
1 cup warm water

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl until blended.. make a depression and pour in water and oil.  Knead thoroughly sprinkling with flour as needed to make a stiff dough.  Dough should not be sticky or tacky if it is spinkle more flour and knead until it isnt.  Take dough and using thumb and index finger pinch off pieces approx half the size of a baseball (NOT a softball!!) On floured cutting board or counter, hand press or rolling pin into a circular shape approx like a tortilla and 8 to 9" in diameter.  In a skillet have hot oil or shortening, test by using a small pinch of flour, if it sizzles on contact the heat is correct,  Place rolled/pressed  dough into hot oil and allow to fry watching as it puffs up and edge begins to turn golden and top appears dry, flip over and allow other side to turn golden only and remove to drain on paper towels.

At this point, you may sprinkle with confection sugar or regular sugar as kids love this for a treat (since Lynnde68 already yankee contaminated it since i taught her this recipe...you may use cinnamon sugar for that yankee touch)

This personally is best eaten warm or hot, after it cools place in a gallon sized zip lock bag and you can leave it out or refridgerate.  Microwave pieces as you want them later for 15 to 20 seconds until hot time varies by microwave.

Without sugar added use as a hot bread with anything or as a shell for Indian taco's (These are huge by the way)

By slightly altering the way you press the dough out before cooking  make
edges thicker with a bowl like depression in the middle and place in skillet
depression facing down to start and it puff and cook into a bowl like shape,
using this you add any berry based baked pudding into the depression while
the pudding is hot and you have 'Wojape' an Indian Dessert also, or do as my kids do and just coat the regular bread pieces hot with jelly or preserves of choice and have as a snack.
