| In first grade, we use balanced literacy, which involves different components: Guided Reading: the teacher will meet with a small group of students to work on reading strategies. Shared Reading: This session will engage the children in books and poems as a whole class. We will work on reading strategies and read together. Independent Reading: The students will practice reading books individually. The books will be on their reading level and the teacher will work individually with the children. Shared Writing: The teacher and students work as a group to create sentences or a story. The students and the teacher both participate in the writing of the message. Interactive Writing: Students take turns creating sentences at the easel. As the teacher helps the one student write at the easel, the other students are writing the same sentences on their dry erase boards. Guided Writing: At the end of the guided reading session, the students create sentences about what they read in the story. Independent Writing: Students complete many different independent writing tasks in first grade. Examples include, journals, writers workshop, book responses and theme writing. |
