Classroom Rules and Procedures
Time is devoted to going over these rules and procedures during the first week of school. On the first day of school, the classroom rules and procedures are created, posted and discussed. By practicing and modeling these rules and procedures, the children soon begin to recognize their importance. Rules and procedures lay the groundwork for a safe and comfortable learning environment.
Raise your hand and wait to be called on. Listen carefully to all directions. Follow directions the first time. Respect others. Be kinds with your words and actions. Work quietly. Do not disturb others. Complete classwork on time. Complete homework on time.
In our classroom, we also have an established morning routine. When the children enter our classroom, they immediately go their table and begin their morning tasks which are as follows:
After I enter the classroom... I will hang up my coat and backpack. I will empty my B.E.A.R. Binder. I will make my lunch choice. I will place any important notes or notices in the "Note Basket". I will join Mrs. Hughes in the Morning Meeting area.
Having a structured morning routine ensures that each child has a clear understanding of our classroom expectations. It also ensures that the school day starts off as smoothly as possible.
A big second grade question usually is , "What do I do when I am finished..." so a chart was established to allow the children to know what to do when they are done and to create self-management. It looks like this:
What I can do when I am finished... I can read a book quietly. I can write a letter quietly. I can work on any unfinished work.
When walking in the hallways at JFK, it is expected that the children are quiet and respectful to the other classrooms and their learning environments. Therefore, we ask ourselves the following questions when we are lined up.
When we are lined up we say... My hands are hanging by my side, I am standing straight and tall, My eyes are looking straight ahead, I am ready for the hall.
