Literacy Information and Resources for Parents
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."   Sir Richard Steele
Motivating Productive Literacy Habits

We hope our children not only learn how to read and write, but also love to read and write.  Unfortunately, many capable readers only engage in assigned reading, rarely for personal enjoyment.  The same holds true for writing activities as well.  Children are motivated to read texts (books, magazines, and all other print alike) that bring them pleasure and/or purposeful knowledge.  It is important to continuously foster a child's motivation to read by providing books and other reading materials that reflect their interests.  Your knowledge of a child's interests, passions, and favorite activities is most helpful in providing a motivational for reading and writing since children need guidance and support in obtaining proper texts and materials.
