Even More Happenings
One of the lessons we taught our children in school was a course on home saftey. What to do in case of various emergencies. When we first moved into our new house, we had no air conditioning for a time. But that time just happened to be in the middle of a Texas summer. Since I was in the middle stages of pregnancy, I was concerned. The heat was hard for me to take. As Bethy and I were sitting in front of a fan trying to stay cool on one particularly sweltering day, I asked her what she would do if I was to pass out right there in front of her. (Pop quiz!) She thought for a moment, then it was as if a light bulb went off in her head. "Stop, Drop, and Roll!" she said. I could not contain my laughter, as I had visions of myself unconscious, with her rolling around on the floor next to me!
I was sitting in the livingroom reading a book while Hannah and Amanda (5 and 3 at the time) were playing in their room. The chatter went unnoticed by me until the sound of Amanda's aggitated voice broke through. "Hannah...." No answer. "Hannah!" a little louder. Still nothing. Finally, fed up with the fact that her sister was ignoring her, she yelled "HANNAH! LOOK AT MY MOUTH!" Hannah answered "Why?" To which Amanda replied "It's talking to you!"
. My son, Matthew, sometimes shows his sense of humor at the most unexpected times. Now that he is 18, he qualifies to work at UPS. And since December is a very hard time of year for the drivers, he hired on as a temporary helper for Tom, his dad. He was delivering a package for Tom at the public library, and struck up a conversation with the employee who was signing for the delivery. After signing, she handed him back his pen and said, "You are nicer than that other UPS man. He actually accused me of stealing his pen once." Matthew got this concerned look on his face and said, "Oh really?!" Encouraged, she went on.. "I didn't want his STUPID pen!" Matthew smiled at her and said, "Well, I will just have to have a talk with him. He's my dad." At that, another co-worker gasped, put her hand over her mouth and giggled uncontrollably as the first lady turned all shades of red.
Tom loves chocolate, as anyone who knows him can testify. Keeping chocolate frosting in the house can be quite a challenge when I am planning to make a cake. I have tried various methods.... from just *asking* him to leave the frosting alone, to freezing it, making it hard to eat. Nothing has worked if he really wants to eat it. I had planned a surprise for him one day. I was going to bake him a big chocolate cake. I bought all the ingredients, including frosting, and HID them. He could not eat something that he didn't know was there, right?
I baked the cake during the day while he was at work. He was going to be so surprised, since I don't bake cakes often. After the cake cooled, I went to my hiding place and pulled out the frosting. The can felt unusually light, and when I opened it I found it half empty. Stuffed down inside the can in the place of the missing frosting was a small piece of paper. Pulling it out, I saw a smiley face drawn on it!  After that, I hid things at  the NEIGHBOR'S house..
