When Bethy was small, she was very plain and bold with her comments and questions. It sometimes came out at the worst moments too. Tom is a UPS man, and since we lived on the area which he delivered at the time, we sometimes held packages for neighbors that were not home yet. On one such occasion, a very portly, older man knocked on my door to pick up his boxes. Noticing his extreme size, Bethy, then 3, came and stood in front of him....looking him over. She seemed to make up her mind about something, and said to him... "You've got fat tummies!" He either didn't hear her, or was politely ignoring her, because just as I came in the room carrying the boxes, she reached up a tiny hand, poked him in the stomach with a little finger and said it again! "YOU'VE GOT FAT TUMMIES!"
We had just installed new carpet, and we were very protective of it, wanting it to last a long time. We had a semi-housebroken dog, and an elderly cat at the time. Choruses of "If that dog wets on the carpet again, he will have to go!" and "That cat had better not miss the litter box or she goes outside for good!" were common. One afternoon Ethan, then the baby, knocked over a glass of water onto the carpet. Abigail, 3, just looked at the puddle and shook her head. "Are we going to have to get rid of Ethan now?" she asked.
Tom and I were relaxing in the livingroom one Saturday afternoon, chatting, while the children played upstairs. They were their usual rambunctious selves, but the noise was not too bad. Every once in a while one of them would come running through the room for one reason or another. After a while I noticed something different. It was very quiet up there. Something was up. It was just at that moment that I noticed the antenna to the baby monitor sticking out from beside the couch. They were spying on us. Continuing to talk, I pointed out the monitor to Tom, smiling. We could hear their muffled giggles above us, and thought we would have some fun. Tom said something about taking them to the park, and we heard "Yeah!" come softly whispered to each other from the bedroom upstairs. Then I said, "You know what? I am hungry. Let's sneak into the kitchen and eat all their candy they have in there. They'll never know." At that, there was a deafening yell from the upper level, and a wall of kids came charging down the stairs!
I was dusting around the house one day and came across Abigail, 5, sitting on the couch all by herself, singing softly and turning the pages of a book. It was a sweet sight, and I didn't want to interrupt it. I kept my back to her and dusted the furniture closer to her so I could hear her better. I was thinking "Oh, how cute!" As I got closer, I heard "Everyone knows my brother's toes smell like stinky cheese. But I don't mind, and I don't care... as long as there's a breeeeeeeze!"
