Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the 2001-2002 school year. I will be guiding your student through his/her investigations of earth/environmental science this year at Leesville Road High School.

As I described to your students in the class policies sheet they received today, science at its best is an active verb rather than a passive noun. We will attempt to do science, not just study it. This will require students to come to class ready to think, solve problems, work cooperatively with others, make decisions, and be creative and energetic. It will also require them to build, observe and measure, take apart, and draw as well as read, write, speak, teach, and work with numbers.

Please ask your student to let you read the Class Policies, Grading, and Methods Of Instruction sheet for Earth/Environmental Science for more information about how we will conduct this class and the kinds of science and technology activities we will explore. It has other important information I will not repeat in this letter, such as the supplies your student will need to bring to class every day, and grading policies. Please take a look.

My background is in education, health care and business, which began with a Masters in Biology Education at Texas Southern University. I taught Biology in New York State for 2 years and taught 2 years of math and science with the Peace Corps in Liberia, West Africa. I then received a B.S. in nursing and worked as a Critical Care Registered Nurse for 20+ years. This included teaching nursing, working at the University of Arizona Medical Center with much of the initial research in heart transplantation and cyclosporin and immunosuppression. After getting an MBA from UNC- Chapel Hill, I taught physicians, nurses and technicians to use medical equipment and installed computer systems in hospitals for 8 years. I concluded this journey by consulting for pharmaceutical companies and managed a medical practice. I am now in my second year at Leesville Road High School. This is a great school with great staff, the best in the area. You can reach me by e-mail ([email protected]), which I check at least daily. You may call the school's main office at 870-4250 to leave me a message. Please leave your name, number, and a time for me to return your call.

We have a class web site (that's where you are now!) that will include assignments and other information about the course and about earth and environmental science. Please check it out and let me know if there are ways we could make it more useful for you. The web address is http://www.geocities.com/mrrpowell.

Please note there are two forms we sent home with your student that we need you to read, sign, and have your student return to class. One is the Class Policies sheet. The second is a Lab Safety and Contact Information sheet (the contact information is very important to helping us keep you informed of your student’s progress) slip. Please help insure your student returns these forms completed and signed.

Thanks for taking the time to read this letter. I look forward to meeting you in person at the Open House on the evening of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. I hope you can attend.

Best regards,
Russ Powell
