Class Policies

(A printed copy of this information was given to students on August 13, 2001.)

  1. The class will be student-centered. This means that each student bears the responsibility for her/his own learning and partially for what classmates learn. It means students help make decisions about what we do as a class.
  2. The following materials should be purchased and brought to class every day: a mechanical pencil (soft lead); basic calculator; eraser; pen (black ink); protractor; compass; three-ring notebook; blank looseleaf paper; composition notebook (bound so that sheets can NOT be removed from the notebook); a school planner.
  3. Students should be prepared for class and in their seats when the bell rings. If you are tardy, sign the tardy sheet and prepare for lunch or after-school detention the next day.
  4. If you must leave the room during class, wait until the lecture portion is completed, then sign out and sign in the time you are gone. You must have the hall pass to leave the room.
  5. When you are tardy or absent, you are responsible for finding out and completing any work you missed. If you miss a test, prepare to take it the next day you return to school.
  6. Hands-on activities require many materials. Safety, respect, and responsibility for good care of the classroom, materials, and equipment are essential. Damage, breakage, defacing and destruction of property will be considered serious offenses that jeopardize everyone's opportunity to learn.
  7. Student-centered, inquiry-based learning requires each student to be in class on a regular basis.
  8. Assignments will often take more than one day to complete, so homework may not be specifically assigned every day. Students should schedule their work and take care in noting when assignments are due.
  9. Timelines for completion of projects and products will be firm and all students should have the work completed by the due date.
  10. Each student will be allowed adequate time to successfully complete each assignment. Recognizing that learners process material at different rates, this policy allows each student reasonable time to do their highest quality work. Quality is very important.
  11. Discovery science and lifetime problem-solving skills are the foundation for the class. Students will collaborate with one another and have the freedom to move around the class as they need to do so.
  12. Trust and communication are essential. I must be able to trust students to behave honorably and communicate openly and honestly. Students must be able to trust me to be fair and honest with assignments and grades.
  13. As the teacher, it is my responsibility to try to meet each student at his/her own level and work to help each student move as far as he/she chooses to go. How much you learn is always up to you.
  14. We will use many teaching styles to account for the several ways that students can learn.
  15. We will participate in the P.R.I.D.E. program of student recognition.
