Calculus AB

This course is an introduction to calculus and is taught at the college level. It covers the syllabus defined by the College Board for the Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB course. On completion of this course, students will

- understand basic differentiation and be able to use it to solve a variety of problems.

- understand basic integration and be able to apply it to a variety of problems.

- understand the relationship between the derivative and the integral.

- be able to model a written description of a physical situation with a function, a differential equation or an integral.

- be able to use technology to help solve problems, interpret results and verify conclusions.

The AP exams are given in early May. Most colleges offer credit and advanced placement to students with sufficiently high AP scores. For example ASU gives 4 credits to students who score a 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB exam. For full information on the AP Program and to learn which colleges offer AP credit, go to the AP web site.

Juniors taking calculus should consider taking our follow-on advanced calculus class as a Senior. This will prepare you for the AP Calculus BC exam which (for the same price) can earn up to twice the college credit as Calculus AB.
