A day in the life of a average college student
The average day of the average college student. (yes I am considering myself
an average college student, sticks tongue out)
The day was like any other at JMU, it
exploded with the screaming of an alarm clock. What can I say about this wonders
device; it is cursed at the same time it is saving our tails. All at once we
want to bash it with a golf ball, and it is making sure we get to class on time
and most importantly that I call gf on time.
The actual call to gf in the morning
is the best way to start the day here at JMU. Its plainly a fun thing, here we
are barely able to open our eyes and now we are attempting the thoughts
necessary for speech. One thing I have realized is that during this time I
should not think, because trying to think of what to say or talk about just
clutters my mind and inhibits regular speech.
After the call is shower time (does a
little dance of putting the robe on). I miss singing in the shower, I really do.
The acoustics of the bathroom are only beat by concert halls (as far as my
experience goes). The showers here really are a trade off, at home I have about
45 min. of hot water if I really want the long shower, here the hot water can
run all day. What good is the water running all day though if you can't enjoy
it. Number one the cleaning ladies come in and they don’t care that you are in
there, just yesterday my roommate was complaining about this one. Number two you
can't sing, because if you do what are the other guys going to think, and
personally I only sing for myself and gf. Third you have to wear those shower
shoes, personally I like the little sticky things on my shower floor at home,
under my feet.
After the shower it is time to do the
hair thing and to get dressed, feelings about this are seasonal. In the summer
the shower is normally cold just so that one can cool off a little before frying
when they get back to there room. In winter the shower gets hotter and hotter as
you try not only to warm yourself but the entire dorm, because maybe if you warm
the entire dorm you will not become a six foot two ice cube before you finish
getting dressed. The getting dressed is also seasonal, for about the last year,
for the first time I have had a summer and winter wardrobe. It figures that this
year the weather would change not only on a weekly or daily basis but on a
hourly basis. This morning I started out with a jacket, long sleeve T shirt, and
jeans. By the time I go to Dukes I will probably be in just the long sleeve T
shirt and the jeans (if the rain holds out, gives a look at the sky to scare
back the rain drops). Then by the time I go to the rest of my classes I will
only need a short sleeve T shirt and jeans (I like jeans). Then after class I
will need the long sleeve and the Jacket again.
Then comes the joys of Computer
Information Systems (CIS). It is a eight am class, what else do I have to say
other than it is a experience that the average college student dreads and avoids
at all cost, but is doomed to be stuck in. Yes yes yes, I complain about the
time, but it really is a great class. I can't tell what this professor does but
it seems that without effort he just gets all this massive amounts of
information into your head (even at early hours that I wonder if God is awake
yet [if I went too far on this comment let me know]). He has a way about getting
the class to participate as well. I remember in my General music class no one
wanted to participate, because it was a morning class and no one's minds were
awake enough to process information. Although in this CIS class the professor
can wake everyone up to answer, and he does it in a non-violent way. Today we
didn't want to answer, so he said "patients is a virtue and luckily I have it in
abundance" and he just stood there leaning against the wall. Maybe there past
five seconds before someone answered. He just has a way about him that you want
to raise your hand and answer. We even had group work today, which I enjoy in
this class. The guy that sits next to me, is another fun average college student
and I enjoy talking to him before class and doing group work with him. Our group
work today entailed writing a list of the questions we should ask when planning
a computer system which would be centralized in our classroom. Most of the
questions are boring and not worth the time necessary to mention them, except
for one. While the groups were sharing there questions, one group brought up
that we might need some snacks as we are going to be so centralized in this
room. Without giving it a second thought I called out that we should have mini
fringes under the desks. They guy next to me along with a few other people were
like yea, and even the professor liked the idea.
Next comes this time of the day, it
is the time in-between that first class and food time. During this time, I can
write you E-mails, read the news, work out, eat breakfast (this morning it is
only fruit, I am being good not eating the bakery goods as you told me to stop,
[tummy makes noise]), also I can do free writing or fun reading during this
time. That is the general breaks of it, basically it is free time.
And then there was food. About six
min. to eleven each day I head over to Dukes to get me some grub (yes we
occasionally call it that here [we also have a tendency to call it chow along
with all the normal names for it]). I always get a sandwich, which sandwich is
completely up to my mood. As I always get a sandwich, the lunch ladies have
become accustom to me being there, and I have made friends with all the regular
lunch ladies. It is a very good idea almost a necessity to become friends with
the lunch ladies. Doing this gets you an extra pickle each day (yummmm), it also
opens up the opportunity that you can be waiting in a long line and the lunch
lady will call out to you "what do you want today". After that she will make you
your sandwich right then and there while you wait on line. I also tend to get a
couple of drinks to bring home to the family, fruit, or a salad. Then I look for
a student casher who has been working there a while. This other average college
student is your best chance for maybe getting some of the food for free, so keep
an eye out for them.
Then I return to the dorm, and I eat
while watching Mad about you. Currently I am looking forward to what today's
episode will be. I'm all hyped up because one of the episodes on yesterday, I
had only seen half of it before, so half of it was all new to me.
At about 12:15 I call mom to get the story on what is happening on the home
front. This is when I find out about Mom, dad, kitty, Pam and Sue. This
information I then relay to you at the end of the day. I'm not sure if it is
gossip or not, but I enjoy it so I am not going to think of the ethical
standards that should be followed with it. Second off I am telling it to you and
I trust you. (I just thought about a grammar and audience thing, see I know
exactly who my audience is and that is you. I have not settled into that and I
keep changing between third person and using second person [you, at least I have
always thought that is second person])
After talking to mom comes the fun
times of studying. I do mean that in the literal sense, at times it can be fun.
Much of what I am learning now actually applies to what I am going to be using
in life. The subject of Business law is also something that I just plain out
enjoy. Some of the cases that we come across make me laugh, they make me think,
and they are interesting. Take for example the Hooters case where a guy wanted
to work at the restaurant. He was refused employment based on his sex, and that
was fine with the courts, because Hooters is trying to create an atmosphere.
This means that the door is open for other businesses to attempt to discriminate
on base of race, and maybe eventually expand into religion (some businesses are
already allowed to discriminate on basis of religion, but these make sense
because it does not make sense for a Rabbi to preach in a church on a regular
basis). Then there are cases like the Billy Bob and Peggy Sue case, which I
could have fallen out of my chair laughing if I was in private (I want to tell
you about this case in here, but I want even more to tell you either in person
or over the telephone). There is studying of other good subjects during this
time as well.
At a little past three, I head off to
Statistics. This class is good from before it even starts to when it ends.
Before it starts I normally talk to either this one girl or guy. I got to know
the two of them because of being in Mrs. Prewitt's class last year. I was in
that class for just over a month but it has become like Vietnam, if you were
over there you know Prewitt (Charley) and that is all that is needed (Son I was
in Vietnam for six months now stop complaining about your homework and do it.
Son I was in Mrs. Prewitt's applied calculus class for six weeks now stop
complaining about your homework and do it. Both will get a yes father [this is
an exaggeration but I feel it is allowed as you are the only one other than I,
who is reading this). Then class starts and the professor starts his teaching.
He is another great professor, once you can understand him. Like my CIS
professor he will give the class a couple min break when it needs it. He also
has an understanding of his students and he is very fair and willing to answer
any question. He has even started bringing in Chinese proverbs into class to
inspire us. On Monday he said something in Chinese to one of the Chinese
students, and the student translated it to the class (it meant something like
the pencil is more powerful than the mind, basically we need to write each step
of the equation as we do it and not do it all in our heads where we might miss a
mistake that we make). Also during class when the professor gives us one of
those breaks, I talk to the girl next to me and have conversation.
Blaaaa and then there was Macro
Economics. Imagine Mrs. Snyder, make her younger, and whenever a question is
asked she responds with "I'm very glad that you asked that question". Then while
answering the question she makes it as hard and confusing as possible and will
often not even answer the question at all, but will go on and on about nothing.
The only good things about this class are that I am learning the information I
need from the text book, I am getting an A in it, and the freshman who I sit
next to is a cool guy to talk to during class. This is the only class that I
will talk to a friend while the teacher (I can't bring myself to call her a
professor) is teaching.
Then there is Business law, and the
business law is good. This professor is another great professor. He gets the
class interested in the class each day by starting each class with discussion
about current cases (This is where I get most of my current events these days, I
just can't get enough of the Supreme Court and all the funny things they do).
Then there is lecture, but he is one of the professors who brings in real life
experience into the lecture. If we are going over a difficult concept he will
bring up things about one of his clients who made the mistake (like the guy who
in one line of insults cost himself a million dollars "you lying scum sucking
(and many words that start with the letter B), I will personally make sure you
never work in this business again", or cases which he was involved in. I can go
on and on about this class, but I prefer doing that with you in person or over
the phone, as we can bounce ideas back and forth.
After class I have a home cooked
meal, and there is you me and the night. Then sleep and the entire process all
over again
