IT’S WINNING TIME!
With final exams slated to occur in 2 weeks, it’s time for students
to pull key concepts firmly together. That will require greater commitment,
patience, concentration, and discipline from all students than usual. A
finals review packet will be handed out on Tuesday, January 18th (after
the MLK holiday). The week of January 18th through January 21 will be dedicated
to reviewing for the final exam.
HOW MUCH ARE FINAL EXAMS WORTH? The final will be worth 20% of the students overall grade
WHAT WILL THE FINAL LOOK LIKE? The final exams are made by department committee. I am involved in the writing of the Geometry final. It will be multiple choice in nature, and will take in excess of 1 hour to do assuming they check answers (which I highly recommend).
HOW CAN PARENTS HELP OUT STUDENTS IN PREPARING FOR FINALS? Please make sure your student looks at the finals packet in the evening, especially the night before the final.
THE ISSUE OF MISSING ASSIGNMENTS: Students are allowed to have 4 blank assignments in gradebook over the 18 week period. Any additional assignments will be entered as a ZERO. Zeroes quickly bring down the homework portion of the grade.
THE ISSUE OF MISSING TESTS: Students will have ONE LAST OPPORTUNITY to make up exams. That will occur after school Thursday January 20th and before school Friday January 21st. TESTS that have not been made up will receive a score of ZERO.
THE ISSUE OF NOTES: Students have been graded for notes. Most were given grades of A through C. A small group received grades of D, or I or U (I for incomplete, U for ungraded due to lack of any meaningful effort. Notes will be regarded after the final. Please look at your students notes to ensure that they are in order to avoid failure.
EXTRA CREDIT? MAKE-UP CREDIT? No extra credit is available. Make-up credit does exist for missing assignments. Geometry students need to copy 5 proofs – with each justification statement spelled out in complete detail. Algebra students are allowed to copy specific definitions as handed out (and still available) in class. These assignments can be used to clear ZEROES that are or will be entered into gradebook.
CONGRATULATIONS! To all students who have bought into ‘the program’ throughout
the 18 week semester and are/will be ready for the beast that is the final
exam. Your real reward is the virtues you have learned by taking on this math,
namely
1) Discipline
2) Concentration
3) Patience
4) Commitment

FOLLOWING ARE SOME SIMPLE COLORFUL EXAMPLES OF GOOD NOTES. IT IS IMPORTANT
TO KNOW THAT ‘COLOR’ WAS NOT REQUIRED TO RECEIVE AN ‘A’.
COLOR, HOWEVER, DOES COMMUNICATE PRIDE OVER THE INTERNET. ENJOY THE WORKMANSHIP
SHOWN FROM A STUDENT ENGAGED IN THE LEARNING PROCESS THROUGH GOOD NOTETAKING.
