The Movie Page
Since everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I decided to take a shot at being a movie critic.  The reason I'm doing this is because some of them annoy me.  Ebert and Roeper, for example, give "TWO THUMBS UP" to almost every movie...even ones that suck completely.  So, I'm going to give my own criticism on movies.  Each time I see a new movie, whether it be in the theater or from Blockbuster, I will give my perspective on it.  Granted, not everyone will agree with me (like I don't agree with most critics) but, hey, you're entitled to your opinions too...

Hello, hello, hello...as Count Olaf might say.  This week's movie review, if you haven't guessed, is on Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events.  What even more unfortunate than the events in this movie is how my weekend played out.  On Friday, I went to see this movie then went to a wrestling tournament and then Saturday I went to a wrestling tournament and then saw this movie...again.  Sad isn't it.  Now on to the review!!
The movie oddly begins with The Littlest Elf.  I was sure we had walked into the wrong movie when I saw this little elf come on the screen.  But then Jude Law's voice comes in and tells us that there's still time to leave the theater.  The first time, I would not have left the theater because I wanted to see the movie.  But after seeing it two days in a row, I wanted to walk out the second time.  Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie.  Just don't see it two days in a row.  Anyway, I don't like how they keep telling the viewer that there's still time to leave and to not see this movie.  That's almost asking for someone to actually leave.  I think it's stupid.  And poor Jude Law.  You never get to see his face.  He plays Lemony Snicket so he is just the narrator and nothing more.  Kind of like Anthony Hopkins in The Grinch.  All you hear is his voice when you really want to see him.  Oh well, on to the rest of the movie.
The story revolves around the Baudelaire orphans: Violet, the inventor; Klaus, the reader; and baby Sunny, the biter.  The children first go to Count Olaf, then Uncle Monty, then Aunt Josephine.  The children were brilliantly played and I think that they will all be great actors...someday.  I loved Sunny the most...she was played by twins who I think will end up like Mary-Kate and Ashley...but for now they can stay cute.  Jim Carrey was actually not that bad in the movie.  But I hated Count Olaf.  He was just a foul, disgusting creature and I think that was the author's point.  Meryl Streep had the best supporting role as Aunt Josephine who was paranoid of everything and also loved grammar. Anyway, the acting was very good in the movie.  On to my conclusion.
Although it was very good...this movie was very depressing.  I don't know why kids love it so much.  Unless all kids are turning out to be depressed and find that these are actually happy tales of kids who can't find any happiness.  But if you want to see a movie where "Christmas cheer takes a holiday" (as the tagline says) then this is the movie for you.
