EOA teams field-test gear to determine durability and ease of design. We rate our gear on a scale of 1 -10, higher numbers for ease of use and practical application within the field.
Field Testing the Hiker Water purifier, our EOA Summit Team trekked over 20 miles to the point of Spruce Knob, the highest point in WV at 4,800 feet. Needless to say, weight was an issue when packing for a 3 day expedition. With water on the trail, we dropped 12 pounds per pack by loading our Katadyn Hiker Purifiers and treating water
on the trail. The pumps worked like a dream, and pack a ton of useful features such as the intake tube float which allows the pump to pull water from free flowing areas by preventing the intake line from settling in silt at the bottom of a stream. A sedement filter comes standard and is used  to prevent unwanted gunk from entering the pump's filter cavity. No sick days came afterward, proving first-hand that the pumps truely protect against Giardia and Cryptosperidium among others.
