Grand Touring cars by definition sleek two-seater coupes, that offer a high performance specification, but little in the way of luggage space. With now a days also having Prototype cars racing as well in all series'.
The American Le Mans Series is the world's leading championship for sports cars. It was started three years ago by entrepreneur and Motorsport enthusiast Don Panoz to mirror the rules of the classic Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race. As a result, the series hosts a wide variety of different cars ranging from open top prototypes, like the Audi R8 and Panoz Roadster, to cars closely based on production machinery, such as the BMW M3 and Porsche 911. The main championship, the ALMS, is based in America, while a European championship, the ELMS, has been created to run in tandem with it. Although relatively new, both championships have attracted major manufacturer support.
Apart from the American Le Mans Series, the two major sports car series are the FIA GT Championship and FIA Sportscar Championship. In the FIA GT series, Lister's Storm, Chrysler's Viper and Ferrari's 550 Maranello do battle in the top class, while the smaller class is the domain of the Porsche 911 GT3-R fleets. In the FIA Sports car series, the Ferrari 333SP has reigned supreme, although it can expect challenges from the likes of Ascari, Dome and Riley & Scott. The American Grand-Am series runs to roughly the same rules as the FIA Sports car series, and its most famous race is the Daytona 24 Hours, run in February.
