WELCOME TO THE EVENTS SECTION OF THE ARIZONA Z CAR CLUB!

MAJOR CHANGE IN EVENT FORMAT-
"WE WILL SERVE NO EVENT BEFORE ITS TIME".

WE PREFER QUALITY RATHER THAN QUANTITY.

EVENTS WITHOUT A MEMBER SPONSOR WILL PROBABLY NOT OCCUR..

DISCOUNTS, GETTING THE BEST OUT OF OUR CARS, CUSTOMIZING, KNOWLEDGEABLE MEMBER ENTHUSIASTS, STREET PERFORMANCE AND ROADRACING/AUTO CROSSING, AND TECH SESSIONS ARE WHAT WE ARE ALL ABOUT.

Here are the hightlights of the Activities/Events Calendar. THERE HAVE PREVIOUSLY been a ton of events identified, coordinated and planned. It has been an aggressive effort on behalf of all of us on the Arizona Z Car Club Board to be responsive to its members. We have certainly done our part, now it is up to the entire membership to contribute some of your time to assist yourselves in that effort. A Club is only good as the sum total of all of its members putting in their time and effort. If you would like to have and plan an event, please Contact Dave Oviedo, President at 623-487-8449.

YOU HAVE TO LET US KNOW, TO INSURE THAT IT IS A GO!!!

New Rules, Effective 8-14-2000: As a result of the LOW PARTICIPATION at the recent Bill Johnson's Car Show, we UNFORTUNATELY MUST LIMIT the event format. Although low participation at some events and not others is something that has continued to perplex NOT ONLY US BUT OTHER Z CAR CLUBS, it TAKES ITS TOLL ON THOSE THAT PUT OUT THE EFFORT to plan, coordinate and implement these events.
Therefore, events will be LIMITED TO ONLY those where AN ADVANCED COMMITMENT BY A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF MEMBERS occurs.

YOU DO NOT BOTHER TO SAY, THEN NO EVENTS ON THAT DAY!!

We can not have EVENTS JUST TO HAVE EVENTS, THAT expend member resources of time, energy and $$$ which results in low participation, interest and minimal assistance in planning and coordinating events.

ALL this does is cause a LACK OF ENTHUSIASM for the folks planning the event and for the folks participating in the event.

IF any member(s) want "EVENTS", then they will be EXPECTED TO STEP FORWARD and VOLUNTEER TO PLAN, COORDINATE AND BUDGET FOR THE EVENT.
Otherwise events WILL NOT OCCUR unless someone steps up to handle it.

The following two minimums are required for any event: a minimum of two weeks advance notice of participation, and a (10) member minimum for any event is required. Members interested in any event will be required to plan, organize and contact other members to establish required minimum. All events must be coordinated with Dave Oviedo, President, who will coordinate getting it scheduled on the website calendar.

ALL EVENTS DEPEND, ON THE TIME AND EFFORT YOU EXPEND!!!

So there is no confusion, the calendar will have "ideas" scheduled and only ideas, until a member or members step forward to organize the event. When the event is confirmed as "a go", it will have "It's a go!" next to the date. See below under Calendar of Events.

NO EVENTS IS A SHAME, YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELF TO BLAME!!!

We continue to do what we do best in providing a mulitude of other worthwhile assets to our members such as a major discount program, excellent tech sessions, knowledgeable member enthusiasts with tons of experience with Datsun Z and other Datsun vehicles, and our performance enhancing street and roadracing/auto cross programs, member access to performance equipment, wheels, tires and accessories.

However, as a place to gather on a monthly basis, we have reserved the first Saturday of the month for members to meet and talk at the Pavilions.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS A CLUB GET TOGETHER (NOT MEETING) AT THE SCOTTSDALE PAVILLIONS ON THE 1ST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH. It would probably be a good idea to call Board members if you would like them to attend. LET US KNOW AT LEAST A WEEK IN ADVANCE if you would like us to be there. We will attend if we can. SEE ABOVE. Specific Times and locations for all other events will be noted here on this site.

EVENT UPDATE:

March 25, 2000, 12:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.-Tech Session on Tires and Wheels, Spring cleaning-getting your Z Car ready for a change in weather, and the trip to Motor Sport Auto, at Tom Tucker Tire, Monthly Meeting.

We all had a delightful time this weekend at the Arizona Z Car Club's Tech Session on engine compartment detailing, and performance suspension upgrades. There are now a lot of very clean 280ZX's with detailed engine compartments running around. Duff and John James ran a nice class and got every one involved with detailing brushes until they went over each car with a "fine tooth comb". Our members now have some very clean Z cars.

Dave Oviedo and I ran the suspension portion which ended up taking about 30 hours to completely go through the entire suspension putting in new bushings, cutting the strut housings, new springs and adjustable struts, etc. It was definitely a working session with lots of trips to the automotive and hardware store for this and that through out the afternoon. The correct do's and don't were definitely demonstrated when a cheap spring compressor came apart and slid across the floor. We had issued a warning before hand and were not surprised when it happened. It could have not been staged better even if we had tried. We were able to demonstrate how to get yourself into and out of messes quickly and safely.

The suspension portion of the tech session ended up going well beyond the time for the tech session and we finished about dawn of the next day.

For those of you that attended, thank you for coming. It was nice to see you and we are glad you all had a great time. For members that already had commitments, hope to see you at the next event. We will have pictures soon and will be updating this section.

We look forward to the next event which is our Annual Arizona Z Car Club Picnic at Saguaro Park on April 9, 2000 from 12:30 to 3:30 P.M.

PAST EVENTS:

January 2000
A Calendar for the current calendar year is in the planning stages. We are planning to post the calendar and events on this website for members and interested parties. Members are encouraged to provide any ideas or assistance in planning the events with the couple of weeks between January 09, 2000 and January 22, 2000. Contact Preston at 623-933-1652 or Dave at 623-487-8449.

January 22,2000, General member and meeting of the Board,
We are currently looking for a place to host this event and we are in the planning stages for events and activities for next year, looking for and encouraging member input. We need lots of help. Members attending the January meeting will assist in setting the agenda for the club in the year 2000. Although we have a lot of folks coming out to events to have a great time, the burden of planning and implementing many of the events seem to fall on a few of us. We currently need help in planning activities and other club functions. Areas requiring assistance are noted above. Interested members should contact Preston Pratt at 1-623-933-1652, or Dave Oviedo at 1-602-942-7068.

December 18, 1999, Z Club Christmas Party
The Z Car Club hosted a Christmas party at the President's house. Event began at 2:00 p.m. and lasted until dark. Members were asked to call in advance to notify Preston at 623-933-1652 or Dave at 623-942-7068 that they planned to attend by no later than Friday at 9:00 p.m. December 1999. Newsletters went out with the information in an announcement and provided contact numbers. The club furnished lots of food and beverages, potato chips and dip, and munchies. Since it was the holiday season and members were reminded to not mix drinking and driving. Door prizes were given away through out the afternoon. About 15-18 members attended throughout the afternoon showing off their Z Cars with some providing ideas for events and activities in the up coming year.

October 1999, Drive to See the Aspens in Flagstaff
We took off a 9:00 in the morning the second Saturday of October and drove to Flagstaff to see the lovely Aspens with their golden yellow leaves and white bark, against a dramatically deep blue sky. We transversed 4x4 roads across gullies, ruts and boulders in our Z cars, (remember these cars were very successful in Rally off road endurance racing) parked in a long grass meadow, and sat amongst the aspens groves watching the deer and other wildlife at play. A large coyote with his winter coat which made him look as big as a wolf tried to frolic with the deer but they were not having any of that kind of nonsense. On the way out of the forest a large buck bolted in front of Z barely clearing the hood before disappearing into the forest. We drove into Flagstaff for refreshments, good food and gas before heading for home. A fine weekend for all who participated.

September 18th or 19th 1999, Out of Town run to Prescott and Picnic
Prescott, AZ, Drive and Picnic planned for the weekend of the 18th. Due to conflicting Z event in California, we moved it back one week. Only a few of us braved the heat and got out the Valley of the Sun for awhile. The mountains were nice. Some of us even found our way home.

August 21,1999, Event-Car Show at Bill Johnson's
Thirty Z-Cars all in a row, "sort of"! We filled the front parking lot with Z cars, then spilled out onto both sides of the parking lot and it looked great! We gave out awards and so did Bill Johnson. A lot of good food was provided the participants by the restaurant and the club. A lot of information sharing went on at this event. We need a picture from one of the members eventhough there were many of the same cars.

Annual Z Car Convention, June 14-18, 1999, Sponsored by the Tulsa OK Z Car Club. Unfortunately, many members had to cancel on this event, but some attended. Next year is in Las Vegas so we should plan on attending.

MotorSport Auto Z Nationals, April 23-25, 1999, Orange, CA, Contact MotorSport at 714-639-2620 to register. The event was a success. I returned as an autocross instructor and had a good time helping folks to be faster drivers. There were about 10 members that attended. This year was the largest participation yet for cars at approximately 350 to 400. Stillen also held there event the same weekend for predominately second generation 300ZX's and it was just down the street from the autocross. BMW also had an event across the air strip, so some of us got to drive new BMW's including the M3 and Z3 roadster. Both the opening get together and the dinner were very nice. This is a must event for members.

March 7, 1999, Day of Racing at Firebird, continuation of winter event, Z club sponsored slots, phone 933-1652 or 942-7068 for more information.

March 20, 1999, Firebird Raceway, come see the Electric cars race, sponsored by NASA.

March 27, 1999, Club sponsored picnic at Saguaro Park, 59th Ave between Peoria and Olive Aves. Get there early to retain space 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., lunch at noon. Contact Preston at 933-1652 or Dave at 942-7068 to confirm attendance.

Winter 1998, Racing at Firebird
Although many were signed up, only a few braved the elements and came out to race. Of those only a handful decided to go on the track. Dave Oviedo brought out two cars. One his race car and one a white '71 240Z. At the end of the day, one had a broken transmission and the beautiful race car went flying through the air, end over end, upside down and backwards. It is now "Art" hanging on the wall at his work if any one wants to see what is left of a wonderful race car. Oh well, all the folks that the car beat at last year's MotorSport AutoCross will rest easy knowing they have a chance at the fastest lap of the day. Here is picture of Dave's car in all of its previous glory...

October 1998, Event-Car Show at Bill Johnson's
Twenty Z-Cars all in a row, "sort of"! We filled the front parking lot with Z cars and it looked great! We gave out awards and so did Bill Johnson. A lot of good food was provided the participants by the restaurant and the club. A lot of information sharing went on at this event. We need a picture from one of the members eventhough there were many of the same cars.

National Convention, New Mexico, July 1998
Twenty members and quests attended the National Convention. Preston Pratt, President, Dave Oviedo, Vice President, and Dean and Kathy Tilton were some of the officers that attended. There were many events including a car show, a car ralley, autocrossing, tech sessions, parts sales booths, internet chat sessions with internet buddies, and the National Z Car Club planning and membership meeting. Preston Pratt, President attended on behalf of the club which included rules discussions, as well as, presentations, planning, and site selection for the 1999 and 2000 National Conventions. Although they did not win the car ralley, the Duff James and Preston Pratt team had the honor of being among the first few out and being the first team to various check points, as well as, the first team to complete the course. Dave Oviedo, bought his race car to race in the autocross only to be beat by "Mother Nature". As he and his team mate were waiting at the staging area to go on the course the skies opened up and it rained for 30 minutes. Duff James unfortunately had to get back to Phoenix, otherwise his beautiful '83 280ZX turbo was destined to win some big trophy.

Fun at MotorSport Auto, April 24-27, 1998
About 15 members attended the excellent event over a span of days in Orange California. The weather was wonderful. The welcome dinner great. We renewed many old Z friendships. Preston Pratt was a Autocross instructor with seven students during the event. Dave Oviedo's car earned the fastest time of the days out of over a hundred Z Cars. There were plenty of pretty Z Cars at the car show and many good buys on Z parts during the MotorSport Auto show. Preston Pratt was a planning representative to the 2000 Convention in Las Vegas during the event. It was a busy and fun time. A number of us also went to the beach. Here is the fastest Z Car at the meet.

Malibu Grand Prix
This went very well, again....The fastest driver was Jason Behne with a 49 second lap. Jarad Meekins had the 2nd fastest lap. Jarad was so addicted that we couldn't get him off the track! Donna Bradshaw was awarded for best effort and Paul Landsberg for most improved. Very Special thanks to the folks who planned and organized this event -- Preston Pratt for coordinating with Malibu staff, Dean and Kathy Tilton for braving the heat to record lap times, Rosemarie Graca for registration and last but not least, Dave Oviedo for providing prizes and certificates courtesy of Tom Tucker Tire.

Tech Session on Engine Detailing
The tech session was a big success. Preston returned from California with a beautiful 240Z. The engine is now clean and looks great! Now if we can only get his radiator fixed...

Thanks to Duff James and boys for providing technical assistance on how to detail an engine (we show Duff's engine in our photo file. It's real pretty). Attendees were Duff, John and Andy James, Pat Kennedy, Robin Scotford, Kent and Debra Jacobson, Darrel Carey, Preston Pratt and Rosemarie Graca.

Extra special thanks to Kent and Debra Jacobson for hosting this event, especially to Debra Jacobson for the F O O D!

Everyone worked together and we had a great time. (Sorry, I forgot the camera, so there's no photos of this event). However, we might be able to convince the Jameses to do this again.

June Event-Car Show at Bill Johnson's
Sixteen Z-Cars all in a row, "sort of"! We filled the front parking lot with Z cars and it looked great! Except Howard Wolfley's convertible whose car could be labeled as the one with the most potential? A lot of information sharing went on at this event.

Car Show at the Pavilion
This was GREAT success...We had many cars and many, many more interested people. We will be planning regular showings at the Pavilion in the future.

Malibu Grand Prix
If you missed this one you missed a fun time. We filled the parking lot with Z cars and it looked gooood! This event was so much fun, we have people saying we should do this every three months (good idea, more coming so stay tuned)!

Road trip to Payson, Arizona
Scenery was beautiful and Tonto Natural Bridge was awesome. Thunderstorm on the way back was spectacular. Everyone had a good time. For those that participated, thanks for coming. For those that didn't, sorry you missed out. Hope to see you all next time.
