Welfare State

Reading Between the Lines

The Clock

The world
once round like a clock
has suddenly fallen flat
its ticks long gone
the blue and green and white
replaced by colorlessness
its orbit unspun.

The people pretend they care
pressing for your inner thoughts
as if it matters
why your world has fallen
knowing that the adversity
alivens hope and fear.

The hatred cries out for justice
for all things unforeseen
a paradox
is like the clock
unwinding
and ill at ease.
