The ELCO 77 foot Patrol Torpedo Boats were based on the previous 70 foot design. ELCO Company engineers took the shorter boat and completely redesigned the boat coming up with the semi-successful 77 footer. The first boat was delivered in July of 1941, and ultimately there were 49 of these boats built with 10 of them being transferred to the Royal Navy as part of President Roosevelt's Lend Lease Program . These were used in the Mediterranean. One of these boats was captured and became the German RA-10. The remainder fought hard in close combat with the enemy, losing many of their number in action
The 77 footer was used in the Philippines during the opening months of the Pacific war, and were carrying out offensive patrols within days of the attack on Pearl Harbor with several successes against the Japanese. Lt. John Bulkeley commanded a squadron of 77 footers that ran supplies to Corregidor as the Japanese Army advanced down the Bataan peninsula, and then evacuated Gen. MacArthur and his staff from that beleaguered island before its fall in the spring of 1942. All of the boats that were sent to the Philippines were destroyed by April of 1942 but they had given a, good account for themselves. The 77 foot Elco provided invaluable service through most of the war and by 1945 the survivors ,were disarmed and re-rated as small boats. They were typically armed with a 20mm in a MK-4 mount, a pair of twin 50 caliber as well as 4 -21" torpedo tubes and up to 8 depth charges in place of the after torpedo tubes
