This ELCO 77 foot Patrol Torpedo Boat was rearmed at its forward base in the Solomon's. Often field modifications produce more interesting subjects for modelers to build then the original designs. For example, to fill the need for increased firepower to accompany the torpedo boats on their forays up the slot, three of Ron 3's boats (PT- 59, 60, 61 ) were converted into fast gunboats. In August of 1943, they were stripped of their torpedo tubes, depth charges, and 20mm cannons, and were rearmed with just about everything the crews could requisition. This included 2 40mm Bofors single army type mounts with armored shields and 6 shielded twin 50 caliber mounts with box type magazine, in addition to their standard turret mounted twin 50's. These boats could wreak havoc among the Japanese barge traffic that was trying to re-supply their island garrisons at night all along the Solomon's chain as well as attacking shore installations and enemy patrol boats.
Our 1 :20th scale ELCO 77' PT -59 model is a faithful reproduction of the Original Boat that was commanded by Lt. John F. Kennedy after he recovered from his ordeal involving the loss of PT -109, but only lasted for a little over a month when Kennedy was required to return the states due to his injuries. The PT -59 served in this role until transferred back to the United States and reclassified as a small boat in October of 1944. The gunboat role was taken over by the more versatile 80' ELCO boats, Like the PT -596. ( Our Order# PT -03 )
This ELCO 77 footer package comes as a Fiberglass hull, deck, the removable center section deck for easy access to the interior of your boat for working on your motors and electronics (not included) and cabin structure. A set of 1 :2Oth scale plans is also included with this package. Then the modeler can chose to purchase additional parts from the available fittings listed on the next page, Please find prices on fittings section of this catalog.
