Higgins boat in foreground, click to expand
The 78 foot Higgins type Patrol Torpedo Boats were developed as an independent private venture by Andrew Higgins to compete in the "Plywood Derby" a contest sponsored by the US Navy to determine which company would design and build the the first generation of small fast combatants the Navy wanted to build in large numbers. With its good performance in the competition the Higgins boat was found to be superior in many ways to the ELCO 77' boat. The first boat was 77 feet long and was designated by the USN as PT- 70 and retained for further trials. An extra foot was added to the bow to improve seakeeping qualities on the production boats. The first 78' boats were contracted by the USN in November 1941 and were PT- 71 thru PT -94. Altogether there were 221 of the 78 footers built.
Our 1:2Oth scale ELCO 77' PT Boat model is a faithful reproduction of the Original Boat that won honors in the Medditeranean Sea during World War 2.
