PT -159 is an example of an early war, PT -103 class ELCO 80 foot patrol boat. As US Forces got a toehold in the Solomon Islands in late 1942, the US Navy shipped as many PT boats as could be rounded for immediate action against the Japanese re-supply effort to Gaudalcanal. PT -159 operated out of Tulagi in the southern Solomon's where it had several meetings with the Tokyo Express. PT -159 was the Boat that was sent to rescue L T JG. John F. Kennedy and his crew after the loss of the PT-109. PT-159 was known as 'ACES & JACKS'
The United States Navy's PT Boat squadrons started the war with a heavy anti ship armament that was in many cases ineffective. The boats that survived were repeatedly modified to meet the constant change in mission requirements. PT -159 was typical of the outfitting received during late 1942. , which included a single 20mm on a MK-4 I mount, one twin 50 caliber machine gun, one 20mm gun in place of a twin .50, 4 torpedoes tubes and 2 depth charges. These boats were constantly upgraded by their crews with anything they could beg barrow or steal.
Our 1 :16 scale 80 foot ELCO PT Boat model is a faithful reproduction of the original boat that served in the South Pacific during World War 2.
