Hupp, Abraham: Captain., Born Sept. 27, 1818. Moved to Salem from Shenandoah Co. at age 21. Captain in Roanoke Militia 1840. Occ. manufacturer and dealer in tinware. Commissioned Capt. January 30, 1860. Entered active service May 14, 1861 at Salem for 3 years, age 42. Reelected Capt. May 8, 1861. Transferred from 9th Virginia Infantry May 8, 1862. Relieved from duty July 6, 1862 at Richmond, VA 6 week medical leave of abscence from February 10, 1863, extended to May 22, 1863. Died of cancer at his Salem residence September 2, 1863. Buried East Hill Cemetery, Salem, VA.

The Deyerle Brothers

Deyerle, Madison Pitzer: born November 25, 1839. Att. Virginia Military Institute, Co. I; May 13, 1861; Salem, Captain; Wounded In Action May 5, 1862 at Battle of Williamsburg; died May 14, 1862 of wounds.

Deyerle, Andrew Jackson: Captain of the Dixie Grays, organized June 1861 enetering service July 1861 to become known as Company E, 42nd Virginia Infantry, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Deyerle was wounded at Cedar Run, recovered and was promoted to Colonel in 1863.

Deyerle, John S.: Captain of the Roanoke Guards at the time of its organization in July 1861 and its assignment shortly thereafter to Company K, 54th Infantry Regiment - Western Army. Deyerle was promoted to Major then transfered to the Army of Northern Virginia in 1863, then using a medical degree he earned in New York prior to the war, he left the infantry to serve as a surgeon in a cavalry unit.

Deyerle, Ballard P.: Enlisted at 16 as a First Lieutenant in his brother's Company in Kentucky. He later rode with a cavalry unit. Born November 8, 1844 - August 30, 1872.

General John "Tiger" McCausland

General McCausland died on January 23, 1927, being one of the last surviving Confederate Generals. He is buried near Henderson, West Virginia in the Smith Cemetery overlooking the Kanawha Valley.

We have no photographs of his gravesite.
