I was thinking of a song that many people sing at news years eve night exactly at midnight, and could only remember; If old acquaintance be forgotten and then my brain when blank.  So I began to research what little bit I had and this is what I found.  I thought it might be interesting and wanted to pass it along.

In spite of the popularity of 'Auld Lang Syne' by Robert Burns Scottish poet 1759-1796, it has aptly been described as "the song that nobody knows".

This poem set to music has gone though many renditions, variations with phrases added and deleted, but this one particular version I found the words go as thus:
Translation

auld lang syne.....literally means "old long ago". Better translation is perhaps "times gone by",

be.....pay for,
braes.....hills,
braid.....broad,
burn.....stream,
dine.....dinner/ evening time,
fiere.....friend,
fit.....foot,
gowans.....daisies,
guid-willie waught.....goodwill drink,
monie.....many,
morning sun.....noon,
paidl't.....paddled,
pint-stowp.....pint tankard,
pou'd.....pulled,
twa.....two

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll be mine,
And we'll tak a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine,
But we've wander'd monie a weary fit,
Sin auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.

And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o thine,
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.
The significance of this poem I feel is to have:  remembered past friendships of previous years gone by; while looking forward in anticipation of new friendships for the coming new year.

The most meaningful and poignant words of the entire song I feel are:  And we'll tak a cup o kindness yet,  For auld lang syne!

Remember as you go into 2004 to take a cup of kindness with you as you go in remembrance of times gone by.

And to help you remember old here is a 2004 Earth Calendar.
