Mother's Day Little Company of Mary Breast Cancer Walk

At 8 a.m. on Mother's Day 2009, an anticipated 10,000 people will fill the streets of historic Beverly Hills and Morgan Park for the aptly renamed Beverly Breast Cancer March. Proceeds for the May 10 event will benefit Little Company of Mary Hospital.  Morgan Park Juniors plan to walk together that day. Registration can be done on line http://www.beverlybreastcancerwalk.org/register.html or at Beverly Bank on May 9th. Please join us, we are signing up as individuals (sign your family members up as well). We are hoping to have at least 35 people in our group so that we know that the Breast Cancer Center will gain as much as we raised with the Garage Sale in 2008!

Friendship

Congratulations to Lisa Beemsterboer and Edris Hoover on recent arrivals (child and grandchild, respectively).

Condolences to Luz Wolgamott, on the death of her brother; also to the family of former longtime member Jackie Busca, who passed away at the end of April.

On the lighter side, Happy May Birthday to: Gerri Barrett, Sandy Washington, and Mary Beth Seifert. I hope to see everyone at our many May events.

Women’s Issues

We will continue to collect gift cards for gas, drug stores and department stores this month. In addition, as mentioned by our speaker they are collecting new and or used lipsticks. The lipstick is removed and safety plans are inserted into the tube, which the women can carry in their purse without their abusing knowing. South Suburban Family Shelter is based in Homewood and provides comprehensive, coordinated services to families in which domestic violence exists, without imposing any one solution. For more information regarding SSFS visit their website at www.ssfs1.org.

Conservation Improvement/Conservation

Conservation Hazardous Waste Disposal: take any hazardous waste, electronics or light bulbs to the Unitarian Church on Sunday, July 26, and Sunday, October 25 between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.  They will collect hazardous waste items such as antifreeze, used motor oil, gasoline, oil-based paints, paint thinners, lawn chemicals, solvents, drain cleaners, cleaning products, pool chemicals, mercury, fluorescent bulbs, computer equipment and cell phones. The Beverly Unitarian Church is located at 10244 S. Longwood Drive (The Castle). Their Green Sanctuary group will haul the waste to the city’s Goose Island facility. They do not charge for this service, but gladly accept donations to defray costs. Please don’t miss this opportunity to get rid of the waste that does not belong in our landfills! Thanks!

Remember to Repurpose: It is too cold to go anywhere, so you might as well clean out closets and drawers. It is so easy to pitch the things we are done with, but with a little creative thinking, we can find ways to repurpose what we are done with (see below).

Are their clothes you are done with?   Veteran’s groups, PADS shelters (men and women’s clothing, especially anything warm and/or durable)
Extra office supplies? PADS and Women/family shelters
Non-perishables you’ll never use? Maple Morgan Park food pantry
Done with decorative items? Kitchen items? Pack in a box marked “Morgan Park Juniors Garage Sale” and put in a safe place until October 24.
Finished with small furniture? Catholic Youth Ministry at Morgan Park High School

The planet we leave for our grandchildren, nieces and nephews needs us! Thanks.

"Groups unite to preserve local wooded ambiance.” That was the headline in The Beverly Review under a picture of Morgan Park Junior volunteers in action. We worked with Keeping Beverly Green to plant two trees at Ridge Historical Society on April 19th to celebrate Earth Day & Arbor Day. Also on hand were 19th Ward Ald. Ginger Rugai and BAPA Director Matt Walsh and members of the Garden Club of Morgan Park/Beverly Hills. Keeping Beverly Green donated the black oak and Kelsay Shaw, botanist and owner of Possibility Place Nursery in Monee actually planted it, but we assisted, and we learned the correct way to plant a tree. Fasel & Sons Garden Center in Oak Lawn donated a flowering pear tree for the Juniors to plant at RHS by the back entrance.

After planting and pictures, we all went inside to hear Kelsay speak on the basic care of trees, the importance of tree preservation and planting new trees to replace our maturing canopy trees. He stressed planting a variety of trees to increase diversity and choosing trees and other plants suited to our environment. Our thanks to everyone who showed up on such a dreary day. Thanks also for the refreshments provided by RHS and our committee; everything was delicious as usual.

We ended Volunteers in Action Week by cleaning up the 103rd Street train station on Saturday, April 25th. Karen Meyer, Anna-Marie Brodsky, Jean Catania, Fran Oehmen and Jennifer Karan picked up garbage and cleaned up the planting beds. We were joined by several members of East Beverly Association and three young ladies from McCauley HS who earned several hours of community service. Muffins and coffee were provided by Susan Burnett of East Beverly.
