Professional Toolkit Part D

Collaboration and Leadership Requirement

When I am hired as a school media specialist there are many chunks of data and "evidence" that I'll start collecting. Below is a list of questions I will want the answer to assess the library programs, the collection and to advocate my position and the library itself.

  • What parts of the collection are being read and what parts aren't?
  • Is my collection current enough?
  • What is the physical condition of the condition?
  • Is my budget being effectively used?
  • How does the faculty use the library
  • How do the students use the library?
  • How well does the collection address the needs of the curriculum?
  • What does the community I serve look like and need?
  • How well am I teaching information literacy skills?
  • How well is the library motivating students to read?
  • How well is the library teaching technology skills?

In order to answer those questions, here are some ways I can gather information.

  • Collect circulation records
  • Inventory the collection.
  • Conduct a collection mapping project.
  • Survey the students and faculty for their uses of the library.
  • Test the students for their reading level at the beginning of the year and end of each year.
  • Collect standardized test score records to see how they change from year to year.
  • Keep records on how I collaborate with other faculty and evaluations that follow.
  • Look at the Indiana Department of Education's website for my school's demographic statistics.
  • Keep records on how money is spent and where it comes from, year to year.
  • Keep learning logs for students in how they are learning information literacy and technology literacy skills.

I chose to do a collection mapping project. I used the collection at my old elementary school library, with permission of the resident school media specialist.

Professional Report

This professional report outlines my plan for the project, what I hoped to do with the information I found, how I gathered the data, the analysis of the data, and my conclusion.

Excel Spreadsheet & Data Collection Materials

I adapted my excel spreadsheet form from the School District of Philadelphia's Documents for Library Collection Mapping site. The actual form I adapted from is http://www.libraries.phila.k12.pa.us/pdf/TotalCollectionWorkForm.pdf. In order to fill out this spreadsheet, I used some enrollment information found at the Indiana Department of Education's page on Acton Elementary School.

The Excel Spreadsheet - the first page is raw data. The other two pages are for the data collection portion.
Also included in the spreadsheet I made are 2 other sheets. One is a collection of pie charts, and the other is a collection of bar graphs, analyzing the raw data.
