Steelpan
The steelpan (steel drum) is an insturment made from an oil drum that is
tuned to produce different tones. Upon the approach of Carnival, and around
the same time when the Calypsonians introduce their new songs for the up
and coming season each group chooses a song and practices it for Carnival.
These groups are formed and organizes practices so that all who would like
to participate can do so. All of this preparation is in anticipation for
Panorama. Panorama is an event where groups from all over the island come
together to compete with each other. Each group plays their selected songs
and are judged on several things. They earn points for their enthusiasm,
costumes, the reaction of the crowd, and overall performance.
