Masquerade (Mas)
Mas, short for masquerade, is known as pretty mas in comparison
to J'ouvert. This portion of Carnival evolved from the earlier slave
days of the country. The French and Colonial British who lived on the island
would dress up for a masked ball. Their slaves in turn began to dressup
as a way to mimick and patronize their masters. They would often try to
out do the costumes that their masters would wear, using whatever they
could find. Today the business of making the costumes is rather competitive.
The participants who take part in the festivities join a group, which have
chosen designated costumes, to perform in for Carnival. Each group would
meet at a designated time and place to assimilate. They would then dance and
parade with the rest of the participants where they would cross a grand
stage where they are judged. They are scored on costume, enthusiasm and overall
performance.
