As for his last name, when he was taken in by the priest and Sister Helen, he became known as "Maxwell Church's Duo." On this poor colony, many people didn't have last names, and there was nothing unusual about Duo's case. But Duo enjoyed causing trouble for the Federation and they destroyed the orhanage trying to kill him: ironically, he survived because he was out causing more trouble. After the massacre, he took the name "Duo Maxwell." So he himself chose both his first and last names, in memory of and tribute to those who had cared about him, as well as choosing the name "Shinigami" which he called himself when he first met Professor G, before his Gundam had even been built.
Colony V08744 was very poor. Unlike on other colonies, many nationalities lived there together. So there were communication problems and cultural differences that caused conflict. Discontent led to periodic rebellion against the Federation army. Of course the Federation cracked down hard on them, making it a colony of poverty, hardship, and despair. Even water was rationed, and poor people such as the priest and Sister Helen could only obtain enough to drink. For washing and other purposes, they collected rain and snow. Remember that Sister Helen wanted to cut off Duo's long hair because it was unsanitary. And they could only wash their clothes about once a month. That's why the children taunted Duo, saying he smelled dirty. When Sister Helen said he didn't, she must have been lying.
Duo went to a school run by the Federation army. The children of soldiers and Federation officials wore uniforms, and
the colonist children didn't. The school was open to colonist children in order to brainwash them with Federation
propaganda. Duo was the top student in his class, but he was always getting into trouble because he wouldn't look up to the
Federation children or let them push him around, and the teachers invariably sided with the children whose parents ran
the school. The priest was always being called in. But he told Duo, "I don't care how many times I have to go there and
apologize. Don't worry about it, just go to school tomorrow and do your best."
By the way, the spaceship that Howard and Professor G had just salvaged and were talking about near the end of Duo's
Episode Zero would later be named the Peacemillion.
Mobile Suits: Deathscythe, Deathscythe Hell, Deathscythe Hell Custom
Age and General Appearance: Again, Duo's age depends on what Gundam series or movie you watch. In the 49-episode series he is 15, but in Endless Waltz he is 16. He is 4'9 (156 cm) tall and weighs 95 lbs (43 kg). In "New Mobile Report: Gundam Wing," the 49-episode series currently showing on Cartoon Network in the US, Duo wears an outfit that looks like a cross between a priest and a bad school uniform! Later on, in "Endless Waltz," he disposes of that for a black jacket and black pants with a red shirt under. And that medium-brown waist-length braid of his has been calcluated at almost 4 feet long, almost as long as he is tall!
Personality: Considering Duo's past, I can't believe he's as happy as he is. He is known as the prankster among the Gundam pilots, being the only one who knows what a joke is... Generally he's light, not too serious, very outgoing but somewhat baffled by the others, especially Heero. But sometimes he says something that doesn't jibe with his role as a Gundam pilot, revealing under that extrovert exterior a reluctance to fight...
Abilities: Duo isn't as good with computers as Heero is, but he definitely knows his way around a system. Like all the pilots, he is an expert in weapons, demolition and mobile suit combat, but he also does have one skill none of the others except possibly Quatre) seems to have: a decent sense of humor!
