Part Four
"You bitch. How could you do that? Do you know how much those CDs meant to me? Do you know how often I listened to them?"
"Do you know that there's a record store along the street where you can buy your entire CD collection three times over?"
"For your information, you slut, one of those was a signed copy. *Signed copy.* Do you know how rare they are?"
"Slut? Slut! Oh, so suddenly it's me f*cking some random chick against a wall?"
Silence.
"That's what I thought. Now get out of my ER and out of my life."
Kerry turned and saw almost her entire staff standing at Admit. To a man, they cheered, clapped and cat-called, as the ER chief's face turned as red as her hair.
"Sorry about that, people, but some girls just need telling. Now back to work." Kerry moved briskly toward the desk as her staff scattered, wide grins on every face.
"Wow Dr. Weaver, what on earth did you *do*?"
Randi's voice was filled with respect for Kerry as she asked the question everyone wanted the answer to.
"What anyone would do when their girlfriend runs off with some little whore?" Kerry was still high from her victory, and wasn't really thinking about what she was saying. "Went round to her house, got all her Etheridge CDs - including the signed copy of "Breakdown" - burnt the inserts, threw out the jewel cases and scratched the discs with a nail. Sure showed her."
"Dr. Weaver, I....nice one." Randi was lost for words, amazed at the change in her boss. Since coming out three months ago, the ER chief had changed almost beyond recognition. As if something had been set free inside her. Whatever it was, everyone appreciated the change.
"Yeah, at least that's one ex who won't be back to bother me."
"Mmm, speaking of exes..."
Randi's voice trailed off as her eyes slid over the tall blonde now perfectly framed by the ER's main doors. Kim had entered unseen, had watched Kerry give some woman the telling off of her life, and had been stopped in her tracks by the fire she'd suddenly seen in her ex-lover's eyes. She'd forgotten what being near this woman felt like, how her legs turned to jelly and her eyes grew wide, in an effort to take in as much of this stunning woman as she could.
But that was nothing compared to how she felt when that red hair was flicked up and out of the way, and those green eyes met hers.
Kim just stared into the most beautiful eyes she'd ever seen, unable to move or to speak.
After long moments that seemed to last forever, Kerry's throat somehow regained function. "Kim. What are you....?" But Kerry was unable to finish her sentence. She had finally managed to stop looking at the clock and instantly switch it to Pacific time, wondering what Kim would be doing now, and here was the blonde right before her eyes.
She felt a rush to her stomach, that familiar anticipation she'd always felt in Kim's presence, never quite sure what the next ten minutes would bring. And fell in love all over again.
Kerry's half question finally registered on Kim's brain. Kim felt as if she was removed from this reality, to a place that held only mesmerizing green eyes and the huskiness of Kerry's voice, saved just for her.
But Kim was rendered speechless by the beauty of the redhead, who was now starting to worry. She'd never seen Kim stay this still for this long, even when she had tied her to the bed.
"Dr. Weaver I, uh, believe you've still got your lunch break to take." Randi spoke cautiously, as if too violent an interruption would cause something to break.
"Thank you, Randi." Kerry turned and smiled at her desk clerk, who simply winked and murmured, "Give her a chance."
Kerry gave a tiny nod in acknowledgement, her bewilderment, amazement and anticipation all showing through in one instant. She turned back to face the still-motionless Kim, and walked over, placing a gentle hand on Kim's arm. "Come on, let's go over to Doc's."
