Excerpts from The Magical Household by Scott Cunningham & David Harrington

The Hearth
Olive branches hung on the chimney kept it? secure and serve to deflect lightning strikes. Pine needles scattered in the fireplace or cypress lain on the hearth worked similarly for the fireplace as a whole.
A ladys slipper orchid hung from the chimney prevents outsiders from? casting spells against the homes inhabitants.
Nettles thrown into the fire? conquer fear, while vervain dispels the pangs of unrequited love.
Oak is? burned during healing magic, when someone in the home is sick. This helps to draw off the illness, aids in recovery, and guards the rest of the household from contracting the sickness.
Apple wood is burned before lovers meet at? home, or as an adjunct to love spells.
Ash logs promote energy, pine brings? money into the home, and juniper offers protection.

Thresholds of Power
Garlic or dill suspended over the front door repels those who are? ill-disposed or envious of you from gaining entrance.
Sprinkling mustard? seeds or ground dragons blood on the doorsill will guard the home from the entrance of evil.
Ferns, lilies, marigolds, and juniper are grown on the? front porch to further protect the home.
An old sock filled with salt, sage,? mullein, tansy, and any other protective herbs can be buried beneath the front porch to keep ghosts from the home.

Furnishings
If you are low on? money and luck, try tucking a bit of dried Irish moss (seaweed) under your rugs.
To maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the living room, hang a painting? or drawing of plants, such as evergreens, peonies, or roses. The plants symbolic presence brings their essence into the room.

Dreaming
Induce sleep: Stitch up a 6 square pillow. Stuff it? half full of cotton batting, then fill it with celery seed. Sleep with the pillow on top of your regular pillow, if you use one; the scent should cause drowsiness.
Eucalyptus leaves or cinquefoil placed beneath the pillow guards? our physical bodies while we are asleep.
A cyclamen or hoya (wax plant)? grown in the bedroom will reflect any ill that may come near your sleeping body.
A large red onion tied to a bedpost speeds recovery from any number of? ills, including colds, and also protects the occupant(s) from future sickness.
Fir branches hung over the bed guard against sickness or, if you? are already ill, speed recovery.
Purslane laid on the bed and vervain or? mistletoe twigs hung on the headboard do their part in fighting off nightmares, as does a bit of wood betony.
To ensure a night of pleasant, relaxing? dreams, you can sleep on a small pillow of anise seed or thyme.
Burning? eyebright in the bedroom has long been done to cause psychic dreams, as has sleeping on a pillow of mugwort.
Sipping a glass? of warm rosebud tea before bed may cause visions of the future in your dreams.
Try slipping an onion or? a bay leaf under your pillow to cause visions of the future in your dreams.
If you wish to add zest to a decaying romance, sprinkle orris powder? between the sheets, or add a few drops of patchouli or musk oil to the final rinse water when washing your sheets.
Before lovers or potential lovers come? to visit, burn musk, patchouli, rosemary, or vanilla incense in your bedroom to magickally suggest your intentions and infuse the room with sexual vibrations.
Problems of sexual impotency can be alleviated by placing a? piece of dried dragons blood resin beneath the mattress or tying a branch from a fig tree to the bed.

Stove & Spoon
The aloe plant: If grown in the kitchen, it guards the cook against food preparation accidents that can be very nasty. When using aloe gel in the kitchen, dab some onto major appliances, windows, doors, and tools to safeguard them as well.
A rope of garlic, onions, or peppers can be hung in the kitchen for protection. If this is done, make sure to never use it for food, for the vegetables absorb negativity and spell danger to anyone who eats them.
A bulb of garlic placed on the kitchen window sill is also a fine magical ward, as is an on ion.
Filling a small jar with alfalfa and placing it in the food cupboard will help the family to never know hunger, as long as it is left there.
Place pieces of sweet flag root or alfalfa somewhere in the kitchen to guard against poverty.
Place a whole onion beneath the kitchen sink to absorb negativity. (Replace it every month if necessary)

Bathing and Brushing
If you need courage, dab on rose geranium oil.
Feeling depleted? A drop of cinnamon or allspice oil should perk you up.
If youre in the mood for love, try drenching yourself with tonka or rose oil.
