This book follows the trials of our friends as they face the fact that their valley might be destroyed.
Sniff and moomintroll notice that everyone seems to be obsessed with this star with a tail, when they ask the Muskrat what it is, he tells them a comet, probably going to destroy the earth (what a light-hearted fellow that Muskrat is!).
Moomintroll and sniff take it upon themselves to find out when the comet will be arriving, and how dangerous it will be by making a very adventurous journey to an observatory in the lonely mountains. On the way they meet the wanderer, Snufkin, and the Snorkmaiden and Snork (Moomintroll has a crush on the Snorkmaiden!).
Many adventures follow, and it is well worth reading to find out what happens in the end! :o)
