Thai Academy of Science and Technology
(TAST)

Background
    Science and technology are increasingly recognized as being quintessential to the future of Thailand.
The new constitution specifically states that  Royal Thai Government must actively promote the development
and applications of science and technology. This enormous responsibility rests upon various governmental
agencies and existing scientific societies and associations in the country. While the governmental bodies
undertake a wide range of measures to fund, promote and perform the development of science and technology,
the scientific and professional societies and associations help in popularization of science and youth activities.
At the top policy and planning level, however, studies and monitoring are few and far between.  To meet the
challenges, a group of accomplished Thai scientists and technologists established a foundation called
'Thai Academy of Science and Technology' (TAST) in August 1997.

Objectives
1.  To promote the advancement of science and technology in order to enhance the national efficiencies in:

2.  To evaluate the status and the problems encountered in the applications of science and technology.
3.   To provide scientific opinions and recommendations to the public and the government.
4.  To promote the management and development of technology-intensive industry.
5.  To promote the best practice of scientists and technologists for the national benefits.
6.  To promote the relationship between science and technology and other academic disciplines
      as well as national arts and culture.
7.  To promote cooperation among societies, foundations and academic institutions in manpower
     development and capacity building in science and technology.
8.  To link with foreign organizations with similar objectives.
9.  To refrain from involvement in any political activity.

The members
There were 85 founding members who were accomplished scientists and technologists in the country.
They formed 6 discipline groups in TAST, namely physical science, science management, engineering,
agriculture, and medical science. Each year, there will be a selection of new members. In 1998, 11 new
members were added to the academy.

The work plan
For the first year, there were 4 priority areas of interest:
    1.  Science education;
    2.  Scientific and technological professions;
    3.  Commercialization of science and technology; and
    4. National science and technology policy.
