| Feis Ville-Marie Tournament 2002 The 17th Annual Ville-Marie Feis 9-a-side Gaelic Football Tournament, held on Victoria Day weekend at John Abbot College, Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue, was a big success. Eight men’s teams and four ladies teams took part in what turned out to be a very competitive event. In the end St. Mike’s, Toronto retained the men’s title they have held for the last number of years, defeating Ottawa Gaels in a closely contested final by a margin of 4 points on a score of 2-8 to 1-7. Ottawa Gaels also retained the ladies title last competed for in 2000, by defeating the gallant challenge of Durham Robert Emmet’s on a score of 5-0 to 2-6, a margin of 3 points. Montreal Shamrocks entered two teams in the men’s competition and, although neither of them made it through to the semi-finals, their performances offered encouragement for the future. The first team overcame a very poor display in its first game defeat by Ottawa 2, played much better in an unlucky narrow defeat by St. Vincent’s in the second game, and really came good in beating Toronto Gaels comprehensively in the third game. The second team, featuring five players making their competitive Gaelic football debut, acquitted itself very well in a group which included both the eventual finalists. Two very successful and enjoyable social events were also held over the tournament weekend. On Saturday night there was a tournament party in McKibbin’s Irish Pub, sponsored by MacAuslan’s Brewery. On Sunday night the Presentation Dinner was held in O’Donnell’s Irish Pub, sponsored by Murphy’s/Heineken. Both events were very well attended by the participating teams and a good time was had by all. The Most Valuable Player trophies were awarded to Noel McGinnity of Ottawa Gaels for the men’s competition and Sarah Gowdy of Durham Robert Emmet’s for the ladies. |
