| Denis Leyne 9-a-side Tournament 2002 Montreal Shamrocks traveled to the Denis Leyne tournament in Toronto with a squad of 9 players: Sean Heavens, Stephen Bourke, Nigel Harney, Neil McGrath, Jay Bradley, Greg Longtin, Tim Currie, Richard Cave, and Paddy Mahon. With 4 extra players available from Toronto Gaels, coach Paddy Mahon elected not to play. The guest players were Darragh Sloughy, Ryan Hennessy, Kevin Marshall and David Millar. _____________________________________________________________________________ St. Pat’s 1-6 Montreal Shamrocks 1-1 This was a very closely contested match, which Shamrocks led at half time by 1-1 to 0-3. However, failing to score in the second half, despite some good chances, and conceding a soft goal allowed St. Pat’s to claim a less than deserved victory. Scorers: Jay Bradley 1-0, Neil McGrath 0-1 ______________________________________________________________________________ St. Vincent’s 6-5 Montreal Shamrocks 1-1 In this game St. Vincent’s with their contingent of summer visitors from Ireland proved too strong for the gallant Shamrocks team. However, Neil McGrath did score a beautiful consolation goal in the second half. Scorers: Neil McGrath 1-0, Greg Longtin 0-1 ______________________________________________________________________________ St. Mike’s II 1-8 Montreal Shamrocks 1-2 This was another game that should have been won! Shamrocks started strongly, with their new tactic of crowding the midfield and playing only two players up front proving to be very effective. However, the sending-off of guest player David Millar meant that Shamrocks had to play three-quarters of the game a man down. In spite of this they stayed in contention and, but for some woeful shooting from good scoring positions, could well have emerged victorious. Scorers: Greg Longtin 1-0, Jay Bradley 0-1, Nigel Harney 0-1 ______________________________________________________________________________ Durham Robert Emmet’s 5-4 Montreal Shamrocks 1-0 Once again this was a relatively one-sided contest and definitely Shamrocks worst performance of the day. Only Greg Longtin’s goal was worth remembering Scorers: Greg Longtin 1-0 ______________________________________________________________________________ Montreal Shamrocks 5-8 Buffalo Na Fianna 0-2 Finally, in the last game, Shamrocks came good and utterly dominated the Buffalo team. Almost everybody got in on the scoring and Stephen Bourke even managed to grab a couple of points from his full back position. Overall, a very good performance and a satisfying way to end the tournament Scorers: Jay Bradley 2-0, Kevin Marshall 1-3, Ryan Hennessy 1-0, Neil McGrath 1-0, Greg Longtin 0-3, Stephen Bourke 0-2 ______________________________________________________________________________ In the semi-finals of the competition the hosts St. Mike’s defeated St.Pat’s and in a very closely contested game Toronto Gaels edged out St. Vincent’s. In the final Toronto Gaels young Irish visitors proved too strong for the wily old veterans of St. Mike’s, and provided somewhat of a surprise result to a what was a very competitive and well-run event. |
