About Us

Monkau Mousery is fuelled by a strong passion for mice, their improvement, and wellbeing. Very few people have the time and ability to care for such high numbers of these lovely small rodents, making Monkau Mousery stand out with such a large range of colours and standards of baby and adult mice available. At the moment we currently have approx 16 males and 65 females, with the numbers always growing with each baby we keep from each litter. (we try to always keep one from each litter)

On occaision we supply some mice to selected and trusted pet stores when they make specific orders for mice, but I personally breed and sell the fancier and rarer standards privately to the public. The price of mice varies according to their standard, and the accessories sold with them. We have a number of mouse accessories for sale as well, that you can view at the
mouse club forum.

We began breeding mice in early 2005 with a dove manx boy I named Mr Mouse, a black eye fawn rex manx girl named Mrs Mouse, and a standard tailed rex black banded girl called Nuzzles. These three mice are the original founders of our bloodlines, almost all the bandeds and blazed came from these bloodlines, with outcrossings and line breedings.

So, why mouse breeding? there is a lack of decent mice in the area, and we want to breed good quality, friendly pet mice (id show them if there was a show circuit but the mouse club is a bit dead). We breed ethically, with the health of the mouse in mind. We wont deny a little inbreeding to get the fur or colour standard up to par, but we do try to avoid using any closely related mice.

We handle the babies as soon as possible after their birth every morning and night in order to get them accustomed to humans before they are rehomed. Even with this extended handling, mice are naturally very timid animals, so dont expect companionship from them as you may expect from larger animals.

All the mice are wormed and sprayed for lice and mites when purchased. Buyers are reccommended to bring their own carry cages, as we have only a limited number of boxes for transport home. We provide a care and information sheet with my mice, and if requested, a birth certificate or pedigree is also available.

FEEDING:

All the mice are fed on laboratory blocks bought from the stock feeders. for a little variation they are also fed some mixes from time to time. they are given fresh fruit and veges on a regular basis, as well as a little cooked chicken or tuna from a can. sunflower seeds are their particular favorite. raw pasta is good for their teeth, so a little is given every now and then. peanut butter and Nutrigel is given as a treat and for training purposes. make sure you dont overdo this fatty food, or your mice will get sick or too fat.

CAGES/HOUSING:

Males are housed in 25 and 18 litre tanks. one cage to each male. females live in two big 4 foot tanks. They are in an airconditioned room for the summer.

SUBSTRATE:

We only ever use a safe substrate for the mice and guinea pigs we breed. dusty pine and wood shavings are extremely bad for your mouse and cause respiratory problems that are costly to treat and can be fatal to your fuzzy little pet.

There are several brands that are brilliant products.
We use:

Dr Harrys Lite 'n Easy
Available at Big W
20 litres for $8

Breeders Choice cat litter
Available at Woolworths
3 sizes available

Max's cat and pet litter
Available at Woolworths
endorsed by the RSPCA
$4 for 3 kilos.

each is used with newpaper lining for easy cleaning, as well as plenty of shredded paper for bedding. ensure you dont use kitty litters that are dusty or too absorbent, stick to paper based or other safe litters. Tissues are too flimsy and tend to dissolve as soon as they are urinated on. avoid using them if you can. paper towel is a good replacement for newpaper and tissue.
