Give It A Shot
Chapter 1
So, where do you draw the line between friendship, and a relationship? I always wondered that. Sometimes, it's hard to tell. Other times, it's hard to not think about.
Lemme explain. See I'm Cathy Ferry. Pronounced Fairy... it's just not spelled that way. I'm 25 and I am... hold on let me gain control of myself. A featured cast member on the totally schmurf TV show Saturday Night Live! Do you believe me? No? Well, you don't have to, but you should. Oh, what's schmurf? Schmurf is my word for anything delicious, fun, cool, or hot. Trust me, you'll start using it when I'm through with you.
So, what's up with my introduction? Well, my language arts teacher always said that to keep em coming, ya gotta have a "catchy" intro. Well, I'm positive I could've gotten something more catchy, but I've got a story to tell. We'll start from the beginning.
Basically, 3 of my best friends and I were fooling around when we discovered that the infamous NBC studios were holding auditions for some of their TV shows. We were positive that we could just go in there and audition.. and not get the part. But, we were told we had to make an appointment. I don't remember what I said, or what I did, but I have a feeling I was drunk. Anyway, so the guy who was holding us back, let us in.. I must've been flirting with him, or something. Wait, I couldn't have been drunk... Ah well. So, my friends and I auditioned seperately, and strangely enough, I got a call!! Isn't that crazy? Flora, Audra, and Fawn were totally happy for me. Oh, those are my best friends I was telling you about. So, I promised them everyweek I would get them tickets and backstage passes, and we could still hang out whenever.
One of the main reasons I flipped out when I found out I would become a featured cast member when the new season began was.. well , I have this slight crush on one of the cast members. Geez, I feel like such a little school girl. Chris.. ahh.. just the thought of him back then used to make me smile. Chris Kattan. Who could ask for anything more? Of course, that was when the new season was starting, but I won't give you an ideas.
So, the first show didn't really have me in it at all, but I was still pretty damn nervous. All I got to say was "Ugh, that is so rude!" along side Chris Parnell when we were doing a skit with Maya Rudolph and Jerry Minor. I nearly flubbed my only line! Chris (P) knew I was nervous. he had to put his arm around me. He kinda slightly laughed when he did.. "Nervous, much?"
"Yeah," I answered. "Can you tell?" We chuckled together and walked onto the set. My heart pounded as I realized infront of me.. well... two people in front of me.. was Chris Kattan. Oh, God. He's so gorgeous.... This is where I fade into a memory....
My Sex God turned around and looked at me. "Hey, nice to see you again." He smiled. "Look at you, you're soo pretty!" I would've fainted if Chris Parnell's arms weren't around me. Now, not to sound conceded, but I was used to hearing that I was pretty... guys honking horns when I was riding in my car... walking by and having someone harass me by calling me names... I was used to it, really. But to hear it from Chris Kattan?? Geez, I was swimming in my sweat!
Chris Parnell smiled at me. "She's nervous, Kattan." he said. That was something I noticed. They call Chris Parnell ... Chris, and Chris Kattan.. Kattan. I shrugged inwardly. Chris smelt good.
"Aww.. I feel so bad, don't worry you'll do great!" Kattan looked back at me and smiled. Oh, he has a luscious mouth...
Chapter 2
"You smell good, Chris." I looked up at him. Finally, I got words out of my mouth.
"Oh, thank you. You are becoming one of my favourite cast members!" His cheeks were slightly reddened by the surprising remark. I laughed. I heard the music play. We were on commercial. "So, where are you from?"
"I'm originally from Canada, actually. Then I moved here and met 3 of my best friends. Mr. Michaels lets me give them tickets every week." I smiled, trying to make my best impression.
He smiled. "Mr. Michaels? Oh! We call him Lorne. You must be really nervous! Well, we're about to get started." He grinned. "Good luck. Here, gimme a hug." We hugged, and I heard the music fade out. God, I'm nervous. Now, I recall having Flora wave at me from front row in the audience. She was going to make me laugh! Then, I would be fired! I tried not to look back.
I felt kinda outcasted the next week. Sometimes, Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sans would come up and talk to me... well Horatio would flirt. Oh! And Chris Parnell and I would talk every now and then. But I remember how hard it was to get close to what I called: "The Oldies". They were the senior members of SNL, the members who seemed to be at the top of the food chain. Darrell, Will, Ana, Tracy, and of course.. Kattan. They wouldn't ignore me, I just felt intimidated by them. They were like.. the popular kids. And I was like.. the goth outsider. That week, I didn't have any parts, all I got to do was be there at the end, waving to the camera. And I talked to Chris and Jerry. I started to jump with Jimmy.. that was fun.
Basically, after that, I thought that SNL was nothing like how it was on TV. I didn't get any major parts, because none of the writers knew me, and didn't know what I could do, and what I couldn't do. Flora, Fawn, and Audra would talk to me during our little Friday Night Things.. which had to be moved to Monday Nights, because on Friday's I had to be in the studios. So Monday's, we got together and partied.. blasted music, went to clubs. Everyhing girls are supposed to do. One time, we stayed at home, just talking about anything. They asked me about SNL, and I started crying. I told them it wasn't how I wanted it to be. I told them about not having any ideas for myself, and not having any of the writers write anything for me. We joked around most of the time, but that was the only Monday Night where we were serious.
The next week, since I didn't have any parts again, but needed to stay there anyways, I stayed in my dressing room. I sat on my couch and looked over at the empty closet, that should have been filled with costumes. I felt like quitting that night. I even considered how to approach Lorne. I was so depressed.
Chapter 3
I quickly wiped off my tears and began to reapply my eyeliner. I tied up my hair in a neat bun and sat back down on my couch, hearing the audience clap. I wish it was me out there, making them laugh. At this point, I was jealous of every cast member. I pulled out my notebook, where I had been writing as if it were a journal. I was also writing some of my sketches that I had always had in my head. I started looking over them, trying to find one that would be good enough to be on television. Someone knocked on the door. I jumped. I quickly glanced at myself in the mirror and opened the door.
"Hey, Cathy." Jimmy smiled.
"Oh, hi Jimmy." I grinned back. Jimmy was cute, but I would never have thought of him as anything more. He was , at the time, nothing compared to Kattan. "You can call me Cat, by the way. Come in."
"Oh, okay then, you can call me Jim, Cat. Meow," he laughed. I laughed with him. Even though it was something I was used to hearing. "What'cha up to?"
"Oh, nothing," I quickly put my journal away. "Not to be rude, but aren't you supposed to be out there doing Nick Burns?"
He sighed and pretended to cry. "They cut it out," he sniffed, then laughed. I laughed with him again. He's funny. "So, I came here to ask you if you had any recurring characters planned?"
I flinched. Then sighed, sitting next to him on my couch. "Nope, I am in total shit. I hope Lorne doesn't get mad.. Why?"
"Well, cuz I have one... but I needed another person." he smiled.
My heart pounded. "Seriously?" Thank God! I am saved.
"No." my heart sank. "Yes, of course I do! You wanna hear my idea?" He laughed.
I jumped like a little girl who just got her cat down from the tree. I ran over to Jimmy and hugged the daylights out of him, then kissed him on the cheek. "Thank you soooo much! Of course I wanna hear it!"
"Meow, meow!" He pretendedd to purr, touching the small lipstick mark I had left on his cheek. I licked my finger and wiped it off for him as he talked. "Well, you don't have to say yes, but it looks like even if I was asking you to swim in shit you'd do it." I laughed. "Hey, did I tell you my room is on the other side of this door?" He pointed to the door beside my closet.
"Oh, really? I thought that was just decoration." I shrugged.
He laughed. "I'll leave it unlocked from now on..." He winked. We laughed. "This used to be Molly's room." He started to drift off.. "Oh yeah! The idea! It totally slipped my mind!"
I laughed. "Jimmy.. well, Jim. You are quickly becoming one of my best friends here." I laughed.
"Great! We can stay up all night and watch movies and talk about hot guys, and it'll be so much fun!" He giggled like a girl. I couldn't help but laugh with him. He's cute. "Well, in a nutshell, my idea is just that these two kids are dating, and they act like perfect and nerdy whenever their parents are around, and when their parents are gone they're kinda like these wild and crazy kids, who love to make out and yknow.." he smiled at me. I knew I was smiling.
"That is soo perfect! I am soo excited! Wait, these kids are wild?" I smiled devilishly. "That's me! I'm gonna have fun with this." I laughed.
"So, yeah, if you'd be the girl, I'll be the guy." He smiled and shrugged, ruffling his hair. I knew that meant he was kinda embarassed.
"Sure! This is gonna be so much fun!" I leaned in to kiss his cheek again but drew away, remembering what had happened last time. Instead, I kissed my finger and poked his cheek. He laughed.
Chapter 4
"We're gonna be doing a lot more than that in our skit.." he winked. I burst out laughing. He checked his watch and gasped. "I gotta go get ready, I completely forgot about Weekend Update. I'll see you around, Cat."
"Thanks again!" I waved as he closed the door behind him. I wanted to call the girls, but they were in the studio already. I can't believe it! Woah, wait, Cat. Don't get too excited. Lorne might not like the idea. Personally, I thought it sounded funny. But what if Lorne wouldn't like it because Jimmy already had a recurring sketch with Rachel, that was slightly similiar to ours? Chill out, Cat.
*~*~*~*~*
So, now it's Monday. The girls and I have decided to stay at my house for our get together. It outta be a blast. Wow, that sounded kinda geeky. A 'blast'? Ha! Sometimes I amaze even myself.
"DIVA!!!" Flora screeched, ran up to me and we hugged, as Audra and Fawn followed in through the door. "Hey, gurl!" she smiled.
"You did great on Saturday, I loved that one skit where you were in the entire thing and said every line." Audra teased.
"Shut-up!" I laughed with them. I was still 'skitless'. Oh my gosh! I haven't told them about Jim and I! "Well, you can quit your teasin', Aud, cuz Catwomen over here has found herself a skit!"
Fawn's mouth gaped open. "As if! With who? When was this? How come you haven't told us!?" She cheered.
"Well, I was sitting in my dressing room -- which is pointless cause I never have anything to dress into -- and Jimmy Fallon knocked on the door and--" I started.
"Jimmy fucking Fallon!! Oh my gosh! You're serious, right?" Flora asked, obviously freaking out.
"Hell, yes, hun. Anyway, and he knocked on the door and told me he had a skit planned. And I gave him a kiss on the cheek!!!" I giggled. "God, he smells good!"
They all stared at me.
"What?" I cluelessly asked.
"You think he's gorgeous, you wanna date him..." They chanted.
"Whatever! You guys know my heart belongs to the one the only - Chris Kattan," I smiled, proudly. They continued to chant. The phone rang. "Shhh!! Shut-up!" I picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"Oh, hey is Cathy there?" A voice on the other side asked. The voice was calm, I had no clue who it was.
"This is she?" I posed it as a question.
"Oh! Hi Cat, it's me Jimmy." His voice responded. "You sound different on the phone."
"Oh, hi!! You do too!" I smiled, even though he couldn't see me. The girls looked at me. "So, whatsup, Jim?" They all burst out laughing.
"Uh, nothing much. Are you busy or something, cuz I could call back later." He said politely, though he sounded hyper.
"Ah, nah. Just some of my girlfriends are over, thats all. Say hi to Jimmy you guys," I spoke out of the phone.
"HI JIMMY!!" They all screamed.
"You tell 'em I say hi, too." He said.
"He says hi, guys." I said to them.
"YOU'RE HOT!!" Flora yelled loudly. My face turned a bright red, but I couldn't imagine what Jimmy was thinking, if even I was embarassed.
Chapter 5
"Uh.. thanks?" He answered. I pictured him ruffling his hair, laying on his bed in his apartment. "Yeah, um.. changing the subject." I laughed. "So, Wednesday we're pitching in ideas, and I was hoping you would come this week so we could talk about our idea..."
"Oh, not a problem! Um.. what time do I have to be at the studios?" I asked.
"Well, I usually get there at about 6PM, and the writers will hear our idea and try to work something out. I talked to Lorne about it. He said he wants to see how it would work out. But don't worry, he's always like that."
I nodded, then remembering I was on the phone, I said "Yeah, alright."
"YOU WANNA COME OVER?!" Flora screeched, again.
"Oh my gosh, Flora! Fuck off!" I laughed.
"Who's saying all that?" He chuckled.
"Alright, you are officially freaking me out." He said.
"Thanks," I knew I had a huge grin on my face. "So, I'll see you Wednesday?"
"Yeah, bye."
"Buhbye!" I hung up.
"OOOOOOOOOOH! Cat's gotta boyfriend! Cats gotta boyfriend!" Fawn and Flora said repeatedly, trying to get Audra to join in.
"Cmon, guys, cool it for a second." They quieted to Audra's command. "Did Jimmy just ask you out?"
I burst out laughing, thinking she was joking. She gave me a questionable look. "Is that what it sounded like?" They each nodded. "Well, that's not what's going on. It's just this cast and writers meeting, so we're going to talk about our new skit, and see if they'd write something for us, or put us on air." More confused looks were thrown at me. "Cmon, guys! You know me! You know I would never cheat on Chris like that..."
Fawn laughed. "Cheat? You guys aren't even dating!" They all laughed with her. "I'm kidding ya, so what's the skit about?"
"Oh, now you think I'm gonna tell ya'll? Nope, you guys are just gonna have to wait and see." I grinned.
"What was that thanks for when you were talking to your brand new 'buddy'?" Audra used bunny ears to pronounce buddy. "Hmm? I saw that smile on your face!"
"He was just saying that I was freaking him out.." I said.
"Mm-mm-mm! FREAKING him out? Freaking? Helloooo? He's using naughty boy language around you.." Flora smiled. "He's too naughty for ya, Cat. I say you hand him over to some ladies who can keep him for longer than ten minutes."
I chucked a pillow at her. "Screw you!" We laughed. I love my friends.
Chapter 6
We had just finished watching What Women Want, when Audra suddenly popped out of her spot. "Oh, shit!"
I looked over at her. "What?"
"Look at the phone! You never hung it up!" She pointed to the phone. She was right. It wasn't completely hung up.
"Aw, damn. I hope no one was trying to call." Fawn whispered. She was obviously tired.
"Who's gonna call at 1:00, Fawn?" Flora asked, popping 'Unbreakable' into the VCR. She was still hyper and wanted to watch more movies.
We put it aside ourselves and hung it up properly, then went back to watching movies and talking. We fell asleep one by one, until Flora was the last.
~*~*~*~*~*
I fixed myself up pretty for Wednesday. I wore some tight jeans and a cute shirt. And I made sure I looked cute, cause I didn't want to look ugly and have Kattan start up a conversation with me. That would suck. I quickly reapplied my powder in my car. I was arriving the studios and getting out of the car, when I saw who parked across from me?
"Hi, Cathy." he smiled. I melted. None other than...
"Hi Chris," I stumbled for words.
"It's nice to see you again, finally on a Wednesday. Does that mean we're gonna be seeing you more often?" he asked.
"I hope so," I smiled, giving my best smile that I had rehearsed repeatedly. He opened the door for me. "Thanks," Everything he did was soo nice! Okay, I'm crazy, I admit it now.
"How do you like being on the show so far?" he asked politely.
"Oh, it's definetly freaking me out. I mean, sometimes people hear talk to me other times its like: 'Who's that? I dunno just smile and nod' .. " I paused. Was I really telling him this? "Plus, it seems like nobody knows me, so no one wants to give me a role, y'know?" The whole time I was talking he nodded.
"Oh, completely." He grinned. "When I started out over here, nobody knew me, so they shrugged me off. I know exactly how you feel," He smiled to me. I never realized how short he was. He was my height, maybe a tinsy-tiny bit shorter... it was kind of a turn-off for me. I was always told to have a guy who was a bit taller than me, so when we kiss he would lean down, and I would try to make myself a bit taller. Like in the movies... Jimmy's a bit taller than you, Cat. No! You prefer Chris, you know that, Cat. "Y'know what I mean, Cathy?"
Oh, gosh! He was talking to me that entire time? "Yeah, totally. You can call me Cat, by the way... all my friends do." I smiled up.. well down at him.
"Alright then, Cat, I think I'll enjoy being friends with you..." ... I prayed he would add a 'or maybe more'.. but I didn't hear one. He opened another door for me, and we entered the room full of staff together.
Chapter 7
I waved over to everyone there, I was really nervous. Nobody had settled in yet, and there were a couple people who weren't even there yet. I said hi to some people, Mya, and Ana, as well as Chris (P). Then, I noticed Jimmy was there talking to Horatio. It was obvious he was talking about something personal. He seemed to be whispering to him. Then I noticed his eyes were shifting around, as if he were looking for someone. Until they landed on me.. then paused there, then turned back to Horatio. Oh, my gosh. He was talking about me. First I was outraged... talking behind my back like that! Then I realized, what if he was saying something nice? I calmed myself, and walked over to talk to him and Horatio.
"Hi!" I smiled. "I'm really sorry about my friends that night... they freak even me out sometimes. I smiled as kindly as I could. "Hi, Horatio!" I smiled at him too.
"Hey," they both said simultaneously, Jimmy ruffling his hair lightly. "You look great," Horatio said, smiling at me.
"Thanks," my eyes darted. "So, what are we supposed to say, do, I dunno what I am doing here. I'm actually kinda nervous." I smiled to the both of them, only to have them give me a slight grin back. I was so disappointed... I wanted to smack someone. Sounds like I'm overreacting? I don't think so. "So," I paused. "What were you guys talking 'bout?"
Jimmy fake smiled. He knew that I knew.. hee hee.. that's fun to say. "Nothing, really. Umm.. where are you going to be after the meeting?" He asked.
I blinked. I needed to pick up my journal from my dressing room. "I'm just gonna go pick something up from my room, and then I'm heading home. Why?"
"Oh, I kinda wanted to talk to you..." his voice trailed as more cast members arrived and everyone settled down. Oh, great. Now I'm even more nervous.
Chapter 8
A lot of people liked his idea. Lorne said the writers would make a sample that we could do sometime and if the audience likes it, by next season it can be a recurring character. I'm so excited! I sat on the floor looking under my couch for my journal. Not there. Maybe in my drawer?
The door clicked open and I jumped, my heart skipping a beat. It was the door that led to Jimmy's room. "Hey, sorry if I scared ya." He chuckled, obviously not sorry.
"No problem, I'll just have a heart attack before I'm 26, thank you very much." I nodded, still looking for my journal. "What was it you wanted to talk to me about?"
"Oh, uh.." He ruffled his hair. "I was kinda wondering..." He bit his thumb. "...do, uh... Do you have a boyfriend?" He raised an eyebror, meanwhile, I raised both.
"Huh?" I asked, shocked.
"Oh, no! I-I'm not asking you out, I'm just wondering.." I gave him a 'What-do-you-think-you-are-doing?' look. "I just wanna make sure, cause yknow, I wouldn't want him kicking my ass if we were actually gonna do the skit, yknow?"
"Right, umm.. nope, I don't." I smiled.
"You don't?" he asked, somewhat shocked. "Well, then, who's Chris?"
My eyes widened. "Chris? Who's -- who's Chris?" I searched my mind for an answer. He nodded. "Wait, before I answer that -- where are you getting all this information?" I raised an eyebrow, rising to my feet.
He grinned. "What can I say? I'm a naughty, naughty boy. I can't be handled by a girl who can only use me for ten minutes." That's when it came flooding to my brain. "Do you get it now?"
"So, since I didn't hang up the phone, you stayed on the line?" I asked, pretending to be mad.
"Woah, woah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything. I hung up when you guys started talking about movies." He held up his hands in defense. I couldn't even pretend to be mad at him!
"Relax, Jim. I don't mind." I smiled.
Chapter 9
I invited him to sit on the couch beside me, it was 11:00, and I was tired already. I yawned. We had basically been talking about nothing for the past 15 minutes, and personally, I didn't mind. "So, who's Chris?" he finally asked again.
"Chris?" I stalled for time. He nodded. I fake yawned. "Geez, I'm tired, maybe I should head on home.."
"Nono!" he chuckled. "Cmon, tell me! I'll be your best frrrriend!?" He posed it as a question. "I promise, on my life I will not tell anyone or talk to anyone about this Chris guy, unless of course, you are there with me." he smiled, holding out a pinky. I intertwined mine with his. I couldn't resist.
"Jimmy..." I paused. I was scared. "Chris is this guy I've had a crush on for about five years," I stared at the ground.
"Five years? Geez, you'd think he'd notice after five years..." He laughed.
"I've only known him for a couple weeks, though." He stared at me. "See, I used to watch him on T.V. all the time... now, I work with him." He raised an eyebrow. I nodded.
"Kattan?" He smiled.
"He's not gay!" I laughed.
"Oooh, I can't wait to tell him!" he giggled. I gave him an evil look. "I'm kidding... but can I say one thing?" I nodded, ashamed. "You don't have to be shy around me or anything, you can tell me anything, alright?"
I laughed. "This sounds like Full House."
He smiled at me. "Can I at least throw in your name a bit whenever I talk to him... I'd be like, 'Did you see Cathy on Wednesday? Man, she's hot! What do you think?' How's that?"
I laughed. "Please, he doesn't even know I'm here." I looked up at him. He was closer to me than before now.
"Well, he's crazy if he can't see you the way I do," He stared down at my lips, then back at my eyes. Was he going to kiss me? He can't! I just told him I had a crush on someone I work with, how can that attract him to me?
"I've gotta get going, though. Thanks, Jim." I smiled, pulling myself as far away from him as I could.
"Right, I'll see you on Thursday, alright, Cat?"
Chapter 10
I quickly pulled the covers off of me. Oh, gosh! It's Friday already? Damn! I hope I'm not late! I glanced over at the clock. "Fuck," I muttered. Wait, don't say that! Cool the language, Cat. "Darn," I said instead. It was almost 2. I'm in so much shit. I have to be at the studios by 4:00. I looked at myself in the mirror. "Oh, damn." I look like crap. Wait, why am I in such a bad mood? I tried to force myself to smile, as I walked into the washroom.
I grabbed a towel and took a shower... I won't get into the details of the whole shower thing, but let's just say I figured out why I was in such a bad mood. PMS. Arg!
By the time I got out of the shower it was 2:30. Now, if I could find something to wear that will make me feel better about myself. Deep inside, I knew what that meant. I needed to wear something that made me look.. uhh.. Let's just say, like Britney Spears. That way, I could feel better about my body. I grabbed a tight white shirt and some hip hugger jeans. The shirt said: "Queen Bitch"... which basically described how I was feeling. There was ac cute little crown on it that sparkled. Personally, I knew the shirt was kinda short, and wearing it with hip huggers only meant one thing: Tummy Time! I put on the radio and was relieved to find them playing "Bootylicious", by Destiny's Child. I was in a better mood already.
After I found what I could wear and changed, it was about 3:10. Thats when I realized I needed to leave a little early to be there on time. I have half an hour for make-up and to do my hair. I better get started!
Chapter 11
